A first assist technician is an allied health professional who specializes in assisting surgeons while performing operations. Although a first assist tech may be referred to as a surgical technologist and even perform some of the same tasks, there are significant differences between the two roles. First assist techs are also sometimes called surgical assistants, non-physician surgical assistants, surgical tech first assists, or simply first assists. No matter the title, first assist techs play a vital role in helping surgeons perform safe operations that result in optimal patient outcomes.

First assist techs may hold Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) or Certified Surgical First Assistant (CSFA), among others.
