What is a X-ray Tech?
X-ray technicians/technologists are allied health professionals who specialize in using radiologic imaging equipment to produce images of patients’ body parts for diagnostic purposes. These images provide information to help physicians diagnose and treat injuries and illnesses with greater accuracy. X-ray techs are a type of radiologic technologist and play a vital role in patient care. They’re in-demand specialists with a projected job growth of 7% between 2019 and 2029 for all types of radiologic technicians (BLS).
What does an X-ray tech do?
X-ray techs use cutting-edge imaging methods to provide images of the inside of the human body in a non-invasive manner. The diagnostic images produced can help detect broken bones and other injuries, foreign objects, certain types of tumors, and other abnormalities. Common duties of an X-ray tech include:
Taking a brief patient medical history
Explaining procedures and answering questions
Positioning patients on the equipment and shielding them against radiation exposure
Operating X-ray equipment to get images of different areas of the body
Adjusting equipment to ensure clear images
Adhering closely to physicians’ orders to acquire required images
Analyzing images to determine whether more images are required
Evaluating and interpreting X-ray images
Reporting critical X-ray results to physicians
Recording X-ray procedure details in patient medical records
Cleaning and maintaining X-ray equipment
Where do X-ray techs work?
More than half of all radiologic techs work in hospitals (BLS), but they’re needed in many types of medical facilities. X-ray techs may be employed by outpatient clinics, medical and diagnostics laboratories, urgent care centers, private physicians’ offices, and any facility where X-rays are administered.
What skills make a good X-ray tech?
Good X-ray techs are technologically savvy with superb mechanical and technical skills that allow them to operate specialized X-ray equipment and troubleshoot equipment problems. They also have the knowledge and skills to shield patients and staff from small amounts of ionizing radiation emitted from imaging machines using protective equipment and closely adhering to safety procedures. Their precise attention to detail gives them the skill to obtain high-quality images. Successful X-ray techs also have an array of soft skills, including the ability to work well and communicate with other members of the healthcare team and patients. Strongly developed written communication, critical thinking, organizational, and time management skills are also a must.
How to become a Travel X-ray Tech
Education is the first step on the path to becoming a travel X-ray tech. Technicians are required to earn an associate degree or higher in radiology from a program accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technologists (JRCERT) to be eligible for certification. They can complete a certificate program in radiologic technology to use for X-ray tech certification, but they must already have an associate degree in another scientific field to qualify.
Graduates earn national certification in radiology through the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) after completing an ARRT-approved educational program in radiology and passing an ethics review and knowledge exam. Most states require licensure for X-ray techs, which may require passing a test and/or ARRT Registered Technology in Radiology credentials. Travel X-ray tech positions may require Basic Life Support certification, ARRT certification, and one to two years of X-ray tech experience.
What certifications may be held by X-Ray Technicians?
X-Ray Technicians may hold BLS - Basic Life Support among others.
