Description
Job Summary
Provide registered nursing care to the patients of the Emergency Department (ED) by performing a variety of tasks. They practice within the scope of services dictated by the Missouri Nurse Practice Act. The fundamentals of professional nursing apply throughout all role definitions. Specific functional tasks and delegations to lead and direct the environment and staff the ED are defined below.
Essential Functions
Welcome patients and perform sign-in entry to Emergency Department Information System (EDIS) or Electronic Medical Record (EMR) as needed
Greet EMS personnel or escort patients to room
Complete patient documentation in EDIS or EMR
Collect data appropriate to patient complaint and history
Utilizes the nursing process in the delivery of patient care
Assess patients needing immediate attention or intervention and bring to attention of the Emergency Department Physician and/or Emergency Department Advanced Practice Registered Nurse
Implement appropriate nursing standards of care
After consultation with Emergency Department Physician and/or Emergency Department APRN, initiate appropriate pre-approved protocols
Evaluate patient status and responses to interventions and care
Documentation of assessment/reassessment of patient per policy
Documentation of hourly rounding per policy
Documentation of vital signs per policy
Documentation of numerical pain score per policy
Plan patient disposition: Discharge, complete medication reconciliation, facilitate patient education activities, provide follow-up instructions
Admission/Transfer: Provide appropriate staff for transfer, complete necessary admission/transfer paperwork, exchange professional report for receiving unit/staff member
Perform patient status updates in EDIS or EMR
Advise physician and charge nurse of changes in patient’s condition or vital signs
Perform hourly rounding per policy to provide appropriate information for patients, family members, and significant others
Assist patient to prepare for exam
Document and secure patient clothing, medications, and valuables per policy
Maintain a clean and safe work environment
Be familiar with procedures, equipment, specialty trays and setups including but not limited to the following:
Bag-valve-mask device
IV therapy
Suction
C-spine immobilization and log-rolling
Cardiac monitor
Defibrillator/pacer
Rapid Infuser
Warming devices
Central lines
Chest tube
Report to the charge nurse and obtain direction for the appropriate course of action to be taken to include, but not limited to the following:
Child abuse/neglect
Domestic violence
Elder abuse/neglect
Animal bites
Gunshot wounds
Highly communicable/infectious diseases
Evaluates the quality and effectiveness of care
Participates in chart reviews/audits
Participates in process/procedural reviews
Provides and accepts constructive feedback
Demonstrates activities and behaviors that characterize professional status
Engage in peer evaluation of work performance
Participate in routine department meetings
Active participation in unit based work groups
Use critical thinking skills to recognize patient changes and updates appropriate physician or staff
If standard of care is not followed appropriately documents and reports to charge nurse and physician on duty
Good communication skills with family, patients, co-workers and visitors
Conducts self with courteous and professional behavior
Assist in assuring appropriate patient flow through the emergency department
Listens effectively and provides appropriate information to members of the department and other hospital personnel
Keeps current on policy changes
Follows department and hospital policies to include ED nursing standards
Any other duties as needed to drive to the Vision, fulfill the Mission, and abide by the Values of the organization
Qualifications
Associate's Degree Nursing required
Bachelor's Degree Nursing preferred
RN - Registered Nurse - State Licensure And/Or Compact State Licensure State of MO Upon Hire required
BLS - Basic Life Support Upon Hire required
ACLS - Advanced Cardiac Life Support Upon Hire required
PALS - Pediatric Advanced Life Support Upon Hire required
ENPC - Emergency Nursing Pediatric Certification required
TNCC - Trauma Nursing Core Course required
NRP - Neonatal Resuscitation preferred
STARR Certification within 90 Days required
