Fortunately, with some advanced planning, you can usually arrange to vote using mail-in or absentee ballots for upcoming primary elections and the general election on November 5, 2024. Vivian Health has compiled basic information, including deadlines and voter information websites for all 50 states and the District of Columbia, to make voting as a travel nurse easier to understand.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>General Info for Voting as a Travel Nurse<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-8253\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vivian.com\/community\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2021\/07\/Mail-In-Voting-Ballot-iStock-Resized-scaled-e1717782120519.jpg\" alt=\"Voting as a travel nurse\" width=\"800\" height=\"420\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><b>How to Vote as a Travel Nurse<\/b><b><\/b><\/h3>\n<ul style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Register to vote in your home state.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Learn the absentee voting rules and cut-off dates for your registered voting location.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Request an absentee ballot in advance or have one sent to your temporary travel nursing address.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Vote! And return your ballot before your state\u2019s deadline.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All states except North Dakota require registration if you wish to vote. Many states allow registering to vote up to and including election day, but typically only when done in person. Therefore, if you aren\u2019t already registered, make note of the registration deadlines for your home state in our chart below for online or mail-in applications.<\/span><br \/>\n<b><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All U.S. citizens without a felony conviction can typically register and vote as long as they\u2019re 18 years old by the election date. Check with your state\u2019s election information website for rules regarding the identification forms required to register and to vote, as some states have strengthened ID rules in recent years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You must always vote in the jurisdiction, such as the county and state, where you claim to be a permanent resident. Your ballot will show the candidates for that jurisdiction, not the location of your travel assignment. You can\u2019t register to vote in your temporary travel assignment location unless you permanently move there before election day.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All states let you vote absentee by mail if you will be away from home on election day (see special note for Texas). Alternatively, you can pick up the absentee ballot from your home board of elections before you leave. Some, but not all, states require an excuse for needing absentee voting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some states have \u201cuniversal mail-in voting\u201d and send all registered voters a mail-in ballot to their permanent home address instead of absentee voting. In such states, you must alert your state or local election board to your temporary mailing address to have your ballot forwarded or be sent a special absentee ballot.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to absentee\/mail-in voting, many states offer some form of early, in-person voting, where you can vote at a designated polling place in the weeks leading up to election day. If your state offers this and you will be in your home location just prior to election day, this could be a good option for voting. It negates the need to request an absentee ballot and meet mailing deadlines while you\u2019re away from home.
