Get Ready To Learn <\/b><b>\u2013<\/b><b> A Lot!<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many of the survey responses suggested that self-doubt shouldn\u2019t get in the way of beginning your nursing career, emphasizing that learning is a continuous job for nurses. As one respondent illustrated, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAlways go to work ready to learn 1,000 new things every single day.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the professionals, new nurses should be proactive and \u201clook [out] for the learning opportunities\u201d and \u201cuse [their] resources.\u201d One respondent explained how nurses must remain open to the fact that a lot of learning takes place on the job, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNursing school prepares you for your career in theory, but there\u2019s so much you have to learn on-the-job . . . patient care is far more complex than the textbooks might let you in on.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A good starting point in being more proactive in your learning came from the answers of one respondent, who said they \u201cfocused on learning time management techniques\u201d to enable themselves to \u201ceffectively juggle multiple patients.\u201d They would also \u201creview the healthcare facility\u2019s procedures and policies during downtime\u201d to expand their knowledge beyond the day-to-day.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2_prepare_to_make_family_out_of_colleagues\"><\/span><b>2. Prepare to Make Family Out of Colleagues<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many responses emphasized that the bond between staff, referred to by one respondent as a \u201cnurse bond,\u201d also exists. One nurse expressed that they had made \u201clifelong friends\u201d among their fellow nurses, with a bond so close that they would now consider their colleagues \u201cfamily.\u201d Another gave insight into the reason behind this deep connection, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhen you&#8217;ve been through the trenches together, you grow pretty close!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many nurses surveyed also discussed how leaning on your fellow colleagues can be a great source of education. One advised their younger self to \u201clearn as much as you can from your senior colleagues\u201d and another advised to seek out nurses who are \u201cwilling to mentor you.\u201d It seems that knowledge comes from the relationships you build, with one nurse commenting, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBuild strong relationships with your colleagues. Specifically, the best option is to find a mentor and seek guidance from a supportive, experienced nurse.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3_feeling_overwhelmed_is_normal\"><\/span><b>3. Feeling Overwhelmed Is Normal<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Several nurses emphasized the importance of being kind to yourself at the beginning of your career. Where this was raised, respondents stressed that it\u2019s normal to feel \u201coverwhelmed\u201d or \u201cunsure\u201d of your capabilities. That\u2019s why it\u2019s crucial to \u201ckeep calm,\u201d \u201cremember to breathe\u201d and remind yourself it\u2019s \u201cOK to make mistakes\u201d since it \u201ctakes time to find your rhythm\u201d in nursing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One RN spoke about how your experience as a newly qualified nurse comes full circle saying, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYour first months will develop your patience and emotional resilience. It will feel tough, but it doesn\u2019t last forever. The next cohort of nurses will be coming in before you know it, looking to you for guidance and inspiration.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"4_prioritize_worklife_balance\"><\/span><b>4. Prioritize Work\/Life Balance<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to those with more experience, part of being kind to oneself as a nurse involves maintaining a healthy work\/life balance. One respondent stressed this by saying, \u201cDon\u2019t bring patients home with you.\u201d A separation between professional and personal life is key. Our survey responses revealed how nurses should set out to \u201cget to know their patients\u201d to deliver high-quality care and remember how much patients rely on them to \u201cguide them through the most challenging times in their lives.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One respondent suggested prioritizing patients over charting. Another summarized how important it is to keep patients at the heart of your work and treat all patients equally, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMost importantly, a nurse needs to leave biases in the parking lot. Patient Care Makes It All Worth It<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One respondent said, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNursing is physically, mentally and emotionally taxing, but the satisfaction of caring for your patient and seeing him or her improve makes it all worth it.\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other nurses commented on the \u201csense of fulfillment\u201d from seeing a patient improve and recover, which ultimately \u201ctakes away all the doubt and stress.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nursing is a demanding profession requiring a lot of pre-shift prep. One nurse expressed that nurses ought to project an image of health to their patients, saying, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBe a living example of whole health&#8230; the nurse needs to be fully rested, come with a clear mind, and be fueled with nutrient-dense food and hydration.\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This same respondent also emphasized the importance of being prepared regarding the equipment you carry (i.e., pen light, stethoscope), down to the clothing you wear, discussing how compression socks and comfortable footwear are a must.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2_patients_teach_you_about_life_and_loss\"><\/span><b>2. Patients Teach You About Life and Loss<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the more poignant responses within the research spoke to the grief experienced when patients don\u2019t make it, despite being taught not to let emotions get in the way of your work. This nurse said, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere is an inexplicable sadness that comes from losing patients. As healthcare professionals, we learn not to get emotionally attached to cases. We\u2019re merely extending a helping service. Opportunities for Career Development\u00a0<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When asked what surprised them the most about the profession, one survey respondent talked about being shocked at the \u201cendless opportunities\u201d available through nursing. They felt that there was \u201cmore to nursing than just the bedside\u201d and even went on to say,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf there is a niche or specialty in nursing that doesn&#8217;t exist, you can literally create it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another respondent spoke of pursuing entrepreneurship through nursing, which they felt was surprising since business classes were \u201cnot in the curriculum for nursing school.\u201d They felt they didn\u2019t fit \u201cthe traditional mold in terms of a hospital position,\u201d and were surprised at how the nursing profession can \u201ctake you to so many places.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the nurses we surveyed gave a motivating response on how nursing defines your career for you, regardless of any plans you may have previously made, saying, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe biggest surprise is that nursing will tell you what kind of nurse you want to be, not the other way around.
