She talks about both passions regularly on her TikTok account, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@farmwifenurselife\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FarmWifeNurseLife<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, where her posts run the gamut from beekeeping demonstrations to situations that she comes across as a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vivian.com\/nursing\/or-operating-room-nurse\/travel\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">travel OR nurse<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, like the unintended consequences of patients inserting foreign objects into their bodies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some of those stories are too . . . um . . . sensitive for Vivian to reprint, but she recounted for us one charming tale of a little boy who so badly wanted to keep a rock he found on a school field trip that he hid it in his ear. But it was in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic that she found herself putting that experience to new use.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI was seeing new caregivers coming in post-pandemic, even medical residents, and because of the pandemic and their education, having little hands-on experience,\u201d she recounted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Due to their limited clinical training versus classroom training, these new cohorts were sometimes looked down on by their peers at short-staffed healthcare facilities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brewer told us, \u201cI really tried to put myself in the shoes of these poor new staff [members] coming in, human beings like me, just wanting to start their dream profession and maybe not being as welcomed as previously.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this unusual period, Brewer found herself working to upskill not only novice nurses but also medical students and residents.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI&#8217;ll never forget, there was a medical student that was with a surgeon in a case, and they were putting on their gown and gloves, and the surgeon was absolutely frustrated with the medical student that they didn&#8217;t know the nuances of doing that,\u201d she recalled.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The surgeon criticized the med student in front of the team and asked Brewer to train them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI mean, that&#8217;s just a kick in the gut,\u201d she said of the student. \u201cJust seeing the deflated eyes and heart of this poor student who&#8217;s just there to learn, I went out, and I was the morale boost.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brewer explained that in regular times, facilities have dedicated staff to conduct such training, but lately, facilities have even asked travel nurses like herself to step into that role.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brewer described this period as her opportunity \u201cto be a fresh face to uplift some of the new nursing students, to just give them the reinforcement that they&#8217;re doing the right thing or spend a little extra time to help them solidify their own skills.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>One Career Path into OR Nursing<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-7506\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vivian.com\/community\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2023\/10\/OR-Nurse-Erica-Brewer1-e1698183985583.jpg\" alt=\"OR Nurse Erica Brewer - New\" width=\"600\" height=\"634\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vivian.com\/community\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2023\/10\/OR-Nurse-Erica-Brewer1-e1698183985583.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/www.vivian.com\/community\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2023\/10\/OR-Nurse-Erica-Brewer1-e1698183985583-284x300.jpg 284w, https:\/\/www.vivian.com\/community\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2023\/10\/OR-Nurse-Erica-Brewer1-e1698183985583-768x812.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.vivian.com\/community\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2023\/10\/OR-Nurse-Erica-Brewer1-e1698183985583-968x1024.jpg 968w, https:\/\/www.vivian.com\/community\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2023\/10\/OR-Nurse-Erica-Brewer1-e1698183985583-350x370.jpg 350w, https:\/\/www.vivian.com\/community\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2023\/10\/OR-Nurse-Erica-Brewer1-e1698183985583-700x740.jpg 700w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Years ago, Brewer\u2019s own healthcare journey started as a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vivian.com\/explore\/cna\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">certified nursing assistant<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and then getting her certification as an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vivian.com\/certifications\/emt\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">emergency medical technician<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (EMT) for several volunteer fire departments as she worked her way through nursing school.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHaving that EMT experience, I did my internship as a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vivian.com\/community\/inspiration\/ed-nurse-kelsey-foor\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nurse in the emergency room<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (ER), but when it came time for graduation, that ER didn\u2019t have any openings,\u201d she explained.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As an alternative, Brewer found work as an operating room nurse fresh out of school, a leap not often made by a starting nurse.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere were already hiring gaps in that particular specialty, so they were willing to take me in and teach me right out of school,\u201d she explained. \u201cIt was a very intense six-month orientation process.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brewer later left operating room nursing for a while to try an ER <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vivian.com\/explore\/nursing\/urgent-care\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">urgent care nurse role<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but that stint only reinforced that OR nursing was her true passion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI can honestly say I don&#8217;t think I would&#8217;ve lasted as long as a nurse if it wasn&#8217;t for operating room nursing. I really appreciate the balance that this profession has given me of being able to be one-on-one with a patient, be their voice and keep them safe,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brewer outlined the responsibilities in OR nursing, including preparing the OR, such as inventory and sterilization of instrumentation, lining up all the necessary medications and preparing padding and positioning equipment. Responsibilities also include preparing the patient at the incision site, preparing dressings and coordinating with other departments that may be needed, such as radiology.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brewer sees one of the key benefits of OR nursing as being able to focus intently on one patient at a time with a smart team of caregivers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWithin that room, there&#8217;s an anesthesiologist, a surgeon, oftentimes a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vivian.com\/explore\/physician-assistant\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">physician assistant<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and then also a surgical tech,\u201d Brewer explained, \u201cso, there are multiple minds in that room to care for that one patient, and I love that collaboration.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Balancing Farming and Nursing with Vivian<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-7551\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vivian.com\/community\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2023\/10\/Erica-Brewer-Operating-Room-RN-Resized-e1698292545910.jpg\" alt=\"Erica Brewer, Operating Room RN\" width=\"600\" height=\"542\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vivian.com\/community\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2023\/10\/Erica-Brewer-Operating-Room-RN-Resized-e1698292545910.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/www.vivian.com\/community\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2023\/10\/Erica-Brewer-Operating-Room-RN-Resized-e1698292545910-300x271.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.vivian.com\/community\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2023\/10\/Erica-Brewer-Operating-Room-RN-Resized-e1698292545910-768x694.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.vivian.com\/community\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2023\/10\/Erica-Brewer-Operating-Room-RN-Resized-e1698292545910-1024x925.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.vivian.com\/community\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2023\/10\/Erica-Brewer-Operating-Room-RN-Resized-e1698292545910-410x370.jpg 410w, https:\/\/www.vivian.com\/community\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2023\/10\/Erica-Brewer-Operating-Room-RN-Resized-e1698292545910-819x740.jpg 819w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Travel and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vivian.com\/nursing\/per-diem\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">per diem nursing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have allowed Brewer to maintain a passion for farming that goes back to her childhood.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOur family business as a kid was raising horses in a very rural area,\u201d she recalled. \u201cOnce my work was done, we&#8217;d go down the road and help on the neighbor\u2019s dairy farm. We would help each other quite often.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As an adult, Brewer and her family purchased their own farmland in 2016, where they do vegetable farming, raise 16 hives of bees and operate a food truck. Brewer sees a connection between a farmer\u2019s work ethic and nursing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI&#8217;d always appreciated that agricultural lifestyle and the work that comes into growing food <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">just the hard work of those farm families,\u201d she said. \u201cI think that&#8217;s really also shaped who I am as a nurse and just appreciating the work that goes into a surgical case to get the job done successfully.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To find nursing work that fits around the busiest parts of the farm season, Brewer turns to Vivian. She explained that Vivian provides an easy way to keep herself organized, particularly regarding her <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vivian.com\/certifications\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">certifications in healthcare<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhether it be <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vivian.com\/certifications\/bls\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">basic life support<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vivian.com\/certifications\/acls\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">advanced cardiac life support<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, those certifications have expirations to them,\u201d Brewer explained. \u201cVivian gives you reminders before they are due to expire.
