High patient-to-nurse ratios, low pay and workplace safety concerns have long been typical challenges faced by nurses and other healthcare providers. It comes as no surprise that healthcare professions make up about half of the 2024 U.S. News and World Report&#8217;s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/money.usnews.com\/careers\/articles\/the-most-stressful-jobs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">20 most stressful jobs.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the COVID-19 pandemic, high patient volume, a shrinking workforce and new isolation policies that led to understaffing only exacerbated these challenging dynamics\u2014and they show no sign of letting up. Now, four years after the onset of COVID-19, the 2023 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ahrq.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/wysiwyg\/research\/findings\/nhqrdr\/2023-nhqdr-rev.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Healthcare Quality and Disparities Report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> indicates burnout levels are still on the rise.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vivian.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vivian Health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an online job marketplace for health practitioners, examined data from the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Department of Health and Human Services<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Department of Labor<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0and other sources to explore the myriad factors leading nurses and other healthcare professionals to make career shifts to avoid burnout.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over a third of healthcare professionals say their level of burnout is worse this year than in 2023, according to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/discover.vivian.com\/healthcare-workforce-report\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2024 Vivian Healthcare Workforce Report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>RELATED:\u00a0<\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vivian.com\/community\/wellness\/from-empathy-to-exhaustion-the-hidden-toll-of-compassion-fatigue-and-burnout-in-nursing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">From Empathy to Exhaustion: The Hidden Toll of Compassion Fatigue and Burnout in Nursing<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A 2022 National Center for Health Workforce Analysis job satisfaction survey found over half of nurses have considered leaving their profession, citing <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bhw.hrsa.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/bureau-health-workforce\/data-research\/nssrn-job-satisfaction-report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">burnout and stressful work environments<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as two leading reasons. The picture is more dire in critical care. In 2021, an American Association of Critical-Care Nurses survey found that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/aacnjournals.org\/ccnonline\/article\/42\/5\/58\/31808\/National-Nurse-Work-Environments-October-2021-A\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">67% of nurses planned to leave their current position<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the next three years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amid ongoing struggles, healthcare workers are making career shifts, opting for less stressful work environments like outpatient settings instead of hospitals and critical care.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bhw.hrsa.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/bureau-health-workforce\/Nurse-Survey-Fact-Sheet-2024.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-8435\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vivian.com\/community\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/07\/safetyconcernsandstresstopreasonsforquittingN1UE.jpg\" alt=\"Stacker Story #10 Graphic - Safety Concerns and Stress\" width=\"800\" height=\"501\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vivian.com\/community\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/07\/safetyconcernsandstresstopreasonsforquittingN1UE.jpg 1080w, https:\/\/www.vivian.com\/community\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/07\/safetyconcernsandstresstopreasonsforquittingN1UE-300x188.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.vivian.com\/community\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/07\/safetyconcernsandstresstopreasonsforquittingN1UE-768x481.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.vivian.com\/community\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/07\/safetyconcernsandstresstopreasonsforquittingN1UE-591x370.jpg 591w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><b>Long Hours Drain on Mental Health<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leading up to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nap.nationalacademies.org\/read\/25521\/chapter\/5#67:~:text=Limited%20data%20are,7%2C227)%20in%202011.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">burnout among the healthcare workforce<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> had reached &#8220;crisis levels,&#8221; with about half of nurses and physicians reporting burnout symptoms, according to the National Academy of Medicine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While healthcare workers have long dealt with challenging working conditions, COVID-19 exacerbated workplace stress. In surveying healthcare workers, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/health\/covid-made-health-care-burnout-worse-heres-what-those-workers-need-now\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1 in 2 people felt burned out<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 2022, compared to 1 in 3 people who reported burnout levels in 2018. Rising levels of workplace harassment and decreased trust in management were also concurrently reported.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Staff shortages, isolation policies and the politicization of COVID-19 all contributed to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vivian.com\/community\/inspiration\/how-to-handle-nursing-burnout\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">burnout among healthcare workers<\/a> during the pandemic. Healthcare workers responsible for implementing mask policies and other COVID-19 restrictions became the enforcers, prompting strained patient relationships.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Frontline workers responded to these challenges in several ways. In 2023, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/nation\/kaiser-permanente-health-care-worker-unions-reach-tentative-deal-after-nationwide-strike\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">75,000 healthcare workers went on strike<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> against Kaiser Permanente over wages and staffing shortages, which became the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.seiu-uhw.org\/kaiser-campaign-updates\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">largest healthcare worker strike in U.S. history.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Some healthcare professionals, discouraged by staffing shortages, low pay and the rising threat of on-the-job violence, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.beckershospitalreview.com\/workforce\/25-of-critical-healthcare-staff-willing-to-quit-over-workplace-violence.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">opted to leave the workplace altogether.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Others sought opportunities in outpatient settings and clinics, where flexible scheduling and less stressful workdays can allow for an improved work-life balance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ambulatory care, in particular, is an attractive outpatient setting. With inpatient beds routinely filled in hospitals, ambulatory care that services less acute needs appeals to many healthcare workers. With their lower costs and shorter required stays, outpatient services like retail clinics, urgent care and primary care clinics provide a more intimate and cost-effective experience for providers and patients alike.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plus, the field is growing. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/industries\/healthcare\/our-insights\/walking-out-of-the-hospital-the-continued-rise-of-ambulatory-care-and-how-to-take-advantage-of-it\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more than half of the 3.4 million healthcare jobs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will be in ambulatory care services by 2028.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-8434\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vivian.com\/community\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/07\/nurseburnoutWwuthnursesinhighstressfieldsfeellesssatisfiedN23L.jpg\" alt=\"Stacker Story #10 Graphic - Nurses in high stress fields\" width=\"800\" height=\"458\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vivian.com\/community\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/07\/nurseburnoutWwuthnursesinhighstressfieldsfeellesssatisfiedN23L.jpg 1080w, https:\/\/www.vivian.com\/community\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/07\/nurseburnoutWwuthnursesinhighstressfieldsfeellesssatisfiedN23L-300x172.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.vivian.com\/community\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/07\/nurseburnoutWwuthnursesinhighstressfieldsfeellesssatisfiedN23L-768x439.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.vivian.com\/community\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/07\/nurseburnoutWwuthnursesinhighstressfieldsfeellesssatisfiedN23L-647x370.jpg 647w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><b>Some Fields More Impacted than Others<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People in certain healthcare settings report very high levels of stress, with job satisfaction declining among nurses in emergency and trauma care. Healthcare workers in critical care settings are also the most likely to experience on-the-job violence in the form of verbal and physical abuse, often from patients&#8217; family members. According to a 2023 global survey of healthcare workers from 69 different countries, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.lww.com\/ccmjournal\/citation\/2023\/01001\/104__a_global_survey_of_impact_of_violence_against.71.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">73% reported experiences of on-the-job violence<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the year before.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>RELATED: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vivian.com\/community\/career-resources\/gun-violence-in-nursing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Guns and Gun Violence: What Every Nurse Should Know<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nursing homes are also high-stress environments. While nursing homes reported critical staff shortages, a closer look at workplace data shows the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">outpatient nursing sector<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ahrq.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/wysiwyg\/research\/findings\/nhqrdr\/2023-nhqdr-rev.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> grew by more than 5%<\/a> from 2020 to 2023.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> This data indicates that nurses are leaving high-stress assisted living facilities in favor of lower-impact environments, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vivian.com\/nursing\/home-health-nurse\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">at-home health care services<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The research examined in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hhs.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/health-worker-wellbeing-advisory.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2022 surgeon general&#8217;s advisory addressing burnout<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> suggests workers of color,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">including those from Black and Asian ethnic backgrounds, across the healthcare system are at increased risk of burning out. They are more likely to report inadequate access to protective equipment and report higher rates of testing positive for COVID-19. In Indigenous communities, workers face additional challenges, including reduced access to medical resources and frequent hospital closures. People in rural areas deal with similar issues, such as staffing shortages and hospital closures.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vivian.com\/community\/industry-trends\/how-less-experienced-nurses-could-impact-the-future-of-care\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">early career nurses<\/a>, challenges related to COVID-19 surges that drained critical staffing pools trickled down to pre-licensure programs. Unable to participate in hands-on preclinical training to limit the spread of the disease, some studies suggest that nurses who graduated amid the coronavirus pandemic were <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC10074070\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">less prepared to meet the demands of a global health crisis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, resulting in higher rates of burnout.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Early career nurses whose workload increased during the COVID-19 pandemic were also more likely to report feelings of burnout and fatigue. And, they were three times more likely to self-describe as &#8220;emotionally drained,&#8221; &#8220;burned out,&#8221; or &#8220;at the end of their rope&#8221; than their more tenured colleagues.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>RELATED: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vivian.com\/community\/wellness\/4-ways-to-cope-with-compassion-fatigue-as-a-nurse\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">4 Ways to Cope with Compassion Fatigue as a Nurse<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The compounded consequences of these studies are dire: In 2022, McKinsey researchers <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">projected a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/industries\/healthcare\/our-insights\/assessing-the-lingering-impact-of-covid-19-on-the-nursing-workforce\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">gap of 200,000 to 450,000 nurses<\/a> in the United States by 2025.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-8432\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vivian.com\/community\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/07\/Travel-Nurse-Leaving-Work2-iStock-Resized-scaled-e1721851696261.jpg\" alt=\"Stacker Image Story #10 Interior - Travel Nurse \" width=\"800\" height=\"420\" \/><br \/>\n<small><em><b>Photo Credit:<\/b> Dragana Gordic \/\/ Shutterstock<\/em><\/small><\/p>\n<h3><b>Healthcare Workers Prioritize Work-Life Balance<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Burnout among healthcare workers has a profound impact on the entire healthcare system. It results in poor outcomes for patient care, including decreased time spent between patients and providers, increased medical errors and hospital-acquired infections, and more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vivian.com\/community\/industry-trends\/nursing-shortage-by-state\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">staffing shortages<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Workplace burnout also increases the risk for heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, fertility issues and other mental and emotional disruptions. Moral distress and moral injury, or the profound guilt or shame when making challenging healthcare decisions, are also associated with burnout.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>RELATED: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vivian.com\/community\/career-resources\/how-to-handle-9-nursing-code-of-ethics-dilemmas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">9 Common Dilemmas Involving the Nursing Code of Ethics (and How to Handle Them)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Addressing burnout in the U.S. healthcare system will require dramatic changes. Cultural shifts\u2014such as the CDC&#8217;s recommendation for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/vitalsigns\/health-worker-mental-health\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more supportive management<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that includes worker input\u2014could go a long way in relieving stress and retaining healthcare staff. In 2022, the U.S. surgeon general issued an advisory calling for the protection of the health and safety of all healthcare workers, sending a strong signal about reducing career fatigue.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On a systemic level, creating opportunities for workers to take paid leave or short reset breaks is also recommended.
