For the first time in at least two years, Vivian Health data reveals that travel RN salaries are rising in the United States. At the end of the fourth quarter (Q4) of 2024, the national average weekly travel nursing salary was $2,294, up from $2,282 at the end of the third quarter (Q3).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although this 0.5% increase in average pay rates amounts to just $12 per week, it was the first quarter-over-quarter increase in travel nurse salaries since at least 2022. For instance, earlier in 2024, pay fell 1.7% in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vivian.com\/community\/travel-guides\/quarterly-travel-rn-salary-trends-recap-july-sept-2024\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the third quarter<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2.6% in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vivian.com\/community\/money-taxes\/quarterly-travel-rn-salary-trends-april-june-2024\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the second quarter<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and 1% in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vivian.com\/community\/money-taxes\/quarterly-travel-rn-salary-trends-recap-jan-march-2024\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the first quarter<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Those declines followed an overall wage drop of 11.3% in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vivian.com\/community\/money-taxes\/travel-nursing-salary-trends-2023-year-in-review\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">all of 2023<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The recent wage increase is a welcome relief for nurses who enjoy the various perks of travel assignments. Individual states experienced a range of shifts in travel RN pay from quarter to quarter. The quarterly percent change in the average travel nursing pay for all 50 states is based on comparing pay in September 2024 and pay in December 2024.<\/span><\/i><\/em><\/small><\/p>\n<h3><b>States Where Travel RN Salaries Are Still Rising<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9045\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vivian.com\/community\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2025\/01\/2-States-with-Increase-e1736190111369.png\" alt=\"States with rising travel nurse wages, 2025 Q4\" width=\"1200\" height=\"925\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With travel nurse pay increasing overall in the U.S., it\u2019s no surprise that 20 states saw wages increase at least 1% ($23) per week or more. Five primarily rural states led this group, with wages rising at least 3% in Montana, Idaho, Oklahoma, Vermont and South Dakota in the fourth quarter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Montana was the clear leader, with wages rising 5% from $2,285 in Q3 to $2,399 in Q4, taking the state from average to above-average pay. If you like mountains, wide open spaces of natural beauty and wonders, including Yellowstone and Glacier National Parks, now may be the time to consider a travel nursing role in this great quarter of 2024, only six states saw wages fall substantially. We\u2019ve had our eye on Alaska, the state that experienced the biggest wage drop in Q4. Average pay in Alaska slid 3.4% from $2,762 at the end of Q3 to $2,669 at the end of Q4. Alaska\u2019s pay shift is notable because, despite the significant drop, the state still boasts the second-highest travel RN pay nationwide, behind only California, and remains well above the national average of $2,294.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Note that all the other states on this list of wage decliners<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Florida, Alabama, West Virginia, Mississippi and Nebraska<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">were already at or below the national average before their recent pay decreases. This group experienced shifts in pay of less than 1%, that is, less than $23 per week, up or down. The states on this list run the gamut from low-paying states like Texas ($1,982 per week) to high-paying states like California ($2,852 per week) and everything in between. compares to a state\u2019s cost of living.
