Registered Nurse (Spinal Cord Injury) - Richmond, Virginia


Duties

The Registered Nurse (Spinal Cord Injury) Unit 1W, works under the direction of an RN and reports to the Nurse Manager, Spinal Cord Injury. This position is located within the Nursing Service at the Richmond VA Medical Center. Duties include, but not limited to:

  • Relies on preceptor to set work flow and identify responsibilities.
  • Completes initial assessments and reassessments of assigned patients as directed.
  • Completes plan of care for patients and updates plan of care based on assessments.
  • Documents in a complete and comprehensive manner all assessments, findings, education and interactions with patients or their family units.
  • Administers medications in a safe and efficient manner following established policies.
  • Inserts and manages peripheral intravenous access (PIV)
  • Manages central venous access sites, infusion of continuous fluids and administers IV push medications under direct supervision of preceptor. (Note- can manage without direct observation of preceptor once, competency has been established/validated.)
  • Completes admission and discharge of patients/residents in accordance with established unit policies.
  • The Registered Nurse is directly responsible to the designated manager in the assigned area.
  • The Registered Nurse is responsible and accountable for the provision of direct patient care and for the delivery of quality nursing care to a culturally diverse veteran patient population.
  • The Registered Nurse possesses the knowledge and skills to effectively apply all aspects of the nursing process within a collaborative, interdisciplinary practice setting, which will then enable effective implementation of health promotion and prevention practices, management of acute and chronic illnesses, and attainment of optimal levels of functioning and/or support of the dying patient, and significant others.
  • Role responsibilities and accountabilities also include demonstration of knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age related needs of patients served in the assigned area of practice. This knowledge includes understanding changes associated with aging and principles of growth and development relevant to the adult and geriatric population.
