Description

Unit: NICU - Level 2 **The ideal nurse would have 3-5 years minimum at a staff position in a level 3 before traveling. Experience with delivery attendance is must. ***
12 beds /Nurse:Patient Ratios1:3 and 70-120 births/month
Required Certifications: BLS & NRP Required STABLE is preferred- will soon be a requirement"
Common diagnoses/Types of patients Respiratory distress, feeders/growers, preterm (32+ wks). Anything higher acuity transferred out.
Must have' skills: "Comfortable with Neonatal Resuscitation and stabalization. Required to attend deliveries in rotation with other staff for both vaginal and cesarean, with a respiratory therapist and manage the initial resuscitation and complete transition of the infant if a well baby, or transport the baby to NICU (with RT and charge nurse support/assistance) for observation and/or admission if needed. Must have strong skills in this area. Please emphasize the requirement to attend deliveries. Competence in the care of level 2 NICU babies, being a team player, excellent communication skills, and overall pleasant person
Are RNs required to titrate drips? No Common titratable &/or set rate drips Dextrose, antibiotics, etc. On occasion we have to give IVIG.
Charge Nurse/House Supervisor? Yes, Charge nurse does take patients depending on staffing but generally is not a full assignment. Will do break relief. There is a house supervisor 24/7.
No nurses aids.
Neonatologist in house 24/7? No neonatologist or pediatrician in house; neonatologist rounds in the a.m. then comes in as needed
RT Equipment (vents, Cpap, BiPap, etc) Vents--only until infant can be transported and RT manages the vent
Is there tele on this unit? Yes there are patients on tele, but do not need to be able to read or interpret own tele strips but be able to recognize abnormal rhythms. Phillips monitors.
12 hr shifts. Shift starts 645 Report is at the bedside. OT and extra shift avail Wkend Requirement: EOW
Float to other Sac facilities (Floating also includes to postpartum to care for up to 6 patients (babies only). Travelers are the first to float both to PP and other facilities. Required to assist PP with infant care if not busy in other nicu roles)
