Description

JOB SUMMARY:

Under direct supervision, in the cardiovascular catheterization lab, the radiologic technologist assists in the diagnosis and treatment of patients who suffer from heart and/or blood vessel disease. The technologist will perform all the technical aspects of cardiac cath lab procedures that will include but not limited to:

Manipulation of the X-ray machine and dose to acquire diagnostic images. Performs as a surgical scrub tech using sterile technique. Assists physician during procedure with catheters, wires and device implantation. Understands hemodynamic monitoring and able to identify and respond to abnormal arrhythmias. Stand-by is a necessary responsibility according to hospital needs. All technologists will follow hospital and departmental policy and procedures.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION

Formal training in an accredited Radiology Technologist program

EXPERIENCE

Minimum of two years experience in Cardiac Catheterization Lab and/or Electrophysiology Lab. Able to perform the standard Cath / EP Rad Tech functions in an acute care hospital facility.

PREREQUISITE SKILLS

Thorough familiarity, understanding and mastery of:

Practices of aseptic technique and surgical scrub
Ability to scrub in and assist MD in the following cardiac procedures: Electrophysiology Study and ablation of AFIB, SVT, VT; Implantation of Pacemaker and Implantable Cardiac Defibrillator; Diagnostic Cath; Percutaneous Coronary Intervention; Watchman Implant; TAVR.
Understanding of Hemodynamic Monitoring
Understanding of arrhythmia mechanisms and ability to stim/ pace and measure Electrograms.
Knowledge of device function and management (Pacemakers & ICD’s)

This position requires patient health information to perform the functions outlined as part of this position description.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

ESSENTIAL (not modifiable)

Performs all technical aspects of the Cath/EP procedures. This would include scrub; circulate record data under the direct supervision of the electro physiologist
Scrub: Shaves and preps and drapes patient for the procedures according to the Cath/EP lab P&P. Assists physician during the procedure with catheters and wires and device implantation
Circulate: Locate and prepares needed supplies and ensures their availability. Understanding of cautery machine, operates EP recording system, RF generator and stimulator under direct physician supervision
Maintains inventory, stock and supplies. Orders needed supplies. Reports equipment malfunction and necessary repairs
Ensures availability of sterile supplies and instruments. Cleans equipment after use, prepares clean supplies to be sent to central processing. Periodically checks sterilization expiration date and rotates supplies near expiration
Participates in all QA/QC activities of the Cath/EP lab
Adheres to all state and federal regulations
Maintains high standards of excellence, helps the hospital and the Cath/EP lab to fulfill their missions by providing compassionate care and respecting the dignity of others
