Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Med/Surg Telemetry position at a Level I Trauma, teaching hospital in Charlotte, NC, requiring at least 2 years of Med/Tele experience and active NC or compact RN licensure.

Details

  • Large academic Level I Trauma Center and Stroke Center located in Charlotte, NC, with 874 licensed beds
  • Assignment is within the ADTU (Admissions/Discharge Transition Unit) and satellite med/surg and med-tele units, focused on decompressing the ED and other specialty areas
  • Adult and geriatric patient population with common diagnoses including COPD exacerbation, pneumonia, CHF exacerbation, pulmonary embolism, DVT, GI bleeds, CVA, and trauma-related injuries
  • RN patient ratios range from 1:4 on satellite units (3K, 5A, 3L, 1T) to 1:5–6 on the main unit (6CD), acuity-dependent; surge staffing may increase ratios up to 1:7–8 on 6CD
  • Nurses are responsible for monitoring their own patients' telemetry each shift — there is no dedicated tele tech
  • EMR: Epic (experience preferred)
  • IV pumps: Alaris; medication dispensing: Omnicell; monitors: Philips
  • 12-hour night shifts, 7p–7a, 36 hours per week
  • Every other weekend rotation required
  • Floating is required within the assigned region and scope of practice, potentially to multiple facilities; candidates who are not agreeable to floating should not apply
  • No on-call or call-back requirements

Requirements

  • Active NC RN license or valid compact RN license currently in hand
  • Current certifications required: BLS, ACLS, and NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
  • Minimum 2 years of Med/Surg Telemetry RN experience required, with most recent experience within the last year
  • Proficiency in cardiac rhythm interpretation and telemetry monitoring
  • Required clinical skills include: stroke care, trach care, PIV starts, chest tube management, NGT/Dobhoff/PEG tube placement, drain and tube management (Hemovac, JP drains, flexiseals), foley insertion/management, and PCA pump management
  • Medication drip management required, including cardiac drips, heparin, blood products, and IVF
  • Candidate's permanent address must be more than 50 miles from the facility; local candidates are not accepted
  • At least 1 professional reference dated within the past year, from a Supervisor, Manager, Director, or Charge RN
  • Last 4 digits of SSN and full date of birth required for consideration

Additional Information

  • Responsibilities include caring for acutely ill adult and geriatric patients across med/surg and telemetry units, performing telemetry interpretation each shift
  • Robust support team includes CNAs, a unit secretary, a free charge nurse, 24/7 phlebotomy, 24/7 IV/VAT team, respiratory therapy (RT), hospitalists, and intensivists around the clock
  • Resource nurses on long-term contracts are embedded in the department and will work alongside travelers
  • Orientation includes facility-level NEO and 2 days of departmental orientation
  • Travelers are expected to work 75% of assigned holidays
  • Up to 6 days of RTO may be approved, excluding holidays; any unmet contracted hours must be made up by extending the contract
  • Schedules are set on a 6-week cycle
  • Required scrub color: Navy Blue
  • Free parking is available on-site
  • First-time travelers are not preferred but will be considered
  • Candidates who have worked a permanent position at an Advocate Health Southeast (AHSE) facility must have been separated for at least 1 year before being eligible
