Description
American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Med/Surg Telemetry position at a Level 1 Trauma, academic teaching hospital requiring a minimum of 2 years of Med/Tele RN experience and a GA or compact RN license.
Details
- Work in a 30-bed Med/Surg Telemetry unit at a 637-licensed-bed, Level 1 Trauma, academic teaching hospital with a Chest Pain Center and Stroke Center
- Common diagnoses include heart failure, A-fib, acute kidney injury, COPD, NSTEMI, sepsis, and diabetes, with patients presenting acute or chronic disease, post-op surgeries, and post-cardiac procedures
- Nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:4–6
- 12-hour day shifts, 7A–7P, 36 hours per week
- Weekend rotation requires 5–6 shifts out of every 6-week scheduling cycle
- Holiday coverage expected for one shift of each major holiday: Thanksgiving or the day after, 12/24 or 12/25, and 12/31 or 1/1
- No on-call or call-back requirements
- Floating required to all adult Med/Surg and Telemetry units in-house
- EMR: Epic (experience noted; not stated as required)
- IV pumps: Alaris; medication dispensing: Pyxis; monitors: Philips
Requirements
- Active GA or compact RN license required
- BLS certification required; ACLS preferred
- Basic Cardiac Rhythm (BCR) competency — candidates must pass an EKG competency exam as part of onboarding compliance
- Medical-Surgical nursing certification preferred but not required
- Minimum 2 years of Med/Surg Telemetry RN experience required
- Level 1 Trauma and teaching hospital experience strongly preferred
- Proficiency with trach care, chest tube management, PIV starts, Glucommander, insulin drips, heparin drips, and drips to titrate HR
- Experience with IV insertion and care, central line management, wound care, post-op monitoring, groin management, and Foley insertion and maintenance
- Cardiac monitoring and telemetry interpretation skills required
- 1 professional reference dated within the past year, from a Supervisor, Manager, Director, or Charge RN
- Last 4 digits of SSN and full date of birth required for consideration
Additional Information
- Responsibilities include cardiac monitoring, telemetry interpretation, care coordination with interdisciplinary teams, discharge planning, and patient education with a focus on renal and fluid management
- Unit support includes CNAs (vital signs, glucose checks, baths, ambulation, hourly rounding), a unit secretary (7A–11P), house-wide call secretary overnight, charge nurse, PICC team, discharge nurses, resource team, and central telemetry monitoring
- Respiratory therapy, hospitalist, and intensivist coverage available 24/7
- Orientation consists of 1 day of general facility orientation with educational modules followed by 2 days of departmental orientation
- RTO requests require manager approval
- Navy scrubs required for RNs
- Unit is described as busy with a strong team culture
- First-time travelers are welcome to apply
- Candidates who have worked a permanent position at an AHSE facility must have been separated for at least 1 year before being considered
- Local candidates are accepted — no radius rule applies; the same rate applies for local travelers at GA facilities
