Description
American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a 13-week Cardiac Telemetry travel contract in West Virginia, requiring strip reading ability and ACLS/BLS certifications.
Details
- 43-bed semi-private cardiac telemetry unit (3N) within an acute care hospital setting
- Common diagnoses include post heart cath, TR bands, CHF, COPD, post pacers, arrhythmias, and patients awaiting or post-CABG consult
- Average nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:5, with flexibility up to 1:6
- PCT support available with a goal ratio of 1:8, though may flex higher depending on staffing
- RNs are expected to titrate Heparin drips; Cardizem and Amiodarone are set-rate only; occasional Lasix or Bumex titration
- Unit has dedicated monitor techs and serves as the central monitoring station for the entire North Tower; RNs must be able to read strips independently
- Occasional high-flow oxygen therapy; BiPAP and CPAP used for supportive therapy only
- Charge nurse coverage 24/7; night charge nurses typically carry a patient assignment; travelers comfortable with charge may be considered for that role
- Unit clerk and strong team-based support structure in place
- EMR: Epic
- 12-hour night shifts (1900–0730)
- Self-scheduling is available and block scheduling can be accommodated based on unit needs
- Weekend requirement: every other weekend (EOW); night weekend shifts include Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday
- Travelers are worked into the float rotation and may float throughout the hospital, including stepdown and rarely ICU, but will only be assigned patients within their skillset
Requirements
- Active WV RN license or compact RN license required
- Current AHA BLS and AHA ACLS certifications required
- Minimum 2 years of RN experience required
- Proficiency in cardiac strip reading required
- Comfort and clinical competence with cardiac telemetry patient populations required
- Ability to perform EKGs independently when PCT support is unavailable
- Valid driver's license copy required for consideration
Additional Information
- Orientation consists of 1 day of computer/Epic training followed by 1 day of floor shadowing with a preceptor, then independent practice beginning on day 3
- RNs are responsible for their own admissions and discharges; team support is available if workload becomes unmanageable — the unit averages approximately 8–12 admissions and 8–12 discharges per day
- Holiday coverage for travelers may be required based on unit needs
- Scrub color: royal blue; scrub jackets are optional but must be an actual scrub jacket — no hoodies or sweat jackets
- Candidates must reside more than 50 miles from this WVU facility to be eligible for this travel position
- Travelers who have previously worked at any WVU Medicine location must have taken a minimum 2-year break before reapplying
- Travelers may not work within the WVU system for more than one cumulative year without taking a 2-year break
- The unit is experienced with newer nurses and has a strong culture of teaching and teamwork
