Description

American Traveler is hiring a travel RN for a PACU position at a Level II Trauma facility in Bismarck, ND, requiring a minimum of 3 years of PACU experience and the ability to recover pediatric patients.

Details

  • Acute care hospital setting, Level II Trauma Center
  • Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) — Phase 1 and Phase 2 recovery
  • 15-bed PACU unit
  • Mixed surgical patient population, including daily pediatric cases and patients with disabilities; all OR cases except transplant
  • ICU-level patients may be held in PACU, including vented patients on pressors and requiring blood products
  • Nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:2; 1:1 for pediatric or higher acuity patients
  • RNs are required to read cardiac strips
  • Respiratory equipment ranges from ventilators to nasal cannula (vented to nasal cannula weaning)
  • EMR: Epic (experience required)
  • Mixed 8 and 12-hour day shifts; shift start times include 0730, 0800, 0830, and 1000
  • On-call requirements: maximum 1–2 nights per 6-week schedule (max 8 on-call shifts per 6-week period) and 24 hours of weekend call per 6-week schedule; holiday call as needed
  • Call response time required within 30 minutes
  • Travelers are first to float and may float to inpatient units as helping hands, sitters, or Phase 2 comfort roles

Requirements

  • Active ND RN license or Compact (NLC) RN license — must be active at time of consideration; pending licenses not accepted
  • Required certifications: BLS, ACLS, and PALS — all must be active; pending certifications not accepted
  • Minimum 3 years of PACU experience required
  • Must be able to recover pediatric patients
  • Experience with ICU-level patients (vented, on pressors, receiving blood products) preferred
  • A driver's license must be provided for consideration
  • 2 professional references required: one supervisor from within the last 12 months and one peer or supervisor from within the last 3 years, both including dates of employment and eligibility for rehire

Additional Information

  • Responsibilities include Phase 1 and Phase 2 recovery, transporting patients, and seconding Phase 2 patients out of the OR
  • Charge nurses provide break relief and occasionally take assignments; travelers are not placed in charge roles
  • Nurse aides are sometimes present in the department; RNs are responsible for patient transport
  • Orientation consists of 2 days in the PACU plus buddy call on the first weekend
  • Scrubs are provided by the facility
  • Candidates must reside more than 50 miles from the facility to be eligible
  • Candidates who have been directly employed (full-time, part-time, or PRN) by any CommonSpirit, CHI, or Dignity facility within the past year are not eligible; candidates employed PRN through outside firms will be considered
  • RTO requests of 7 days or fewer per 13-week contract must be submitted upfront; additional RTO will not be approved
