Job Opportunity: Certified Surgical First Assistant (CVOR)

Facility: IU Health Arnett Hospital (IU Health - Medefis system)

Contract Length: 13 weeks
Position Details
- Role: Certified Surgical First Assistant (CVOR)
- Shift: 5 days of 8-hour shifts (7:00 AM - 3:30 PM)
- On-Call: Yes, weekend call from Friday 3 PM to Monday 7 AM, rotating 1 week on/1 week off for CV team
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
- Experience Required: Minimum 10 years of cardiovascular (CV) surgery experience
- First Timers: Not accepted
- Locals Accepted: Yes
- Pending State License: Not accepted; must have Indiana state license and required certifications in hand before starting
- Holiday Work: Must work 2 out of 3 major holidays
- Parking: Free
Required Qualifications & Skills
- Certified Surgical First Assistant with NBSTSA certification
- BLS certification required
- Vein harvesting experience (hard requirement)
- Experience supporting Vascular Surgery
- Robotics experience
- Experience with Terumo vein harvesting system
- Willingness to train and float within scope to meet facility needs
Certifications & Compliance Requirements
- Mandatory Certifications:
- NBSTSA (National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting)
- BLS (Basic Life Support) - AHA only, RQI acceptable
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) - AHA only, RQI acceptable
- Other certifications may be required depending on unit (e.g., PALS, NRP, CHEMO, TNCC, NIH Stroke Certification)
- State License: Indiana state license verification required within 30 days before start
- Background Check: Required within 90 days of start, including 7-year work/living history and education verification
- Drug Testing: Negative 10-panel drug screen within 12 months of start
- Health Requirements:
- Physical exam within 12 months of start
- Fit mask test within 12 months (specific respirators approved)
- Immunizations and titers: Rubeola, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Hepatitis B, Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (strongly recommended)
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year
- Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required for 2024-25 season
- Competency Exams: Unit competency exam and medication/pharmacology competency exam required
- Other Documentation:
- Valid Driver’s License or Passport (clear copy)
- Photo for badge (professional, plain background)
- Completion of facility-specific compliance and confidentiality forms prior to start
Additional Notes
- Clinician must be willing to float within their scope to meet facility needs
- Must complete all required facility-specific orientation, compliance, and policy documents in a timely manner
- On-site fit testing is limited and must be approved in advance if required
- Flu vaccine declinations are not accepted; exemptions must be approved by direct team lead
This position is ideal for experienced CV surgical first assistants with strong vein harvesting and robotics experience who are licensed in Indiana and able to commit to weekend and holiday coverage.
