Job Summary
The Registered Echocardiograph Technologist (Echo Tech) is a specialized, highly trained and skilled sonographer with a thorough knowledge of cardiovascular disease and anatomy. The echo tech uses high frequency sound waves (ultrasound), and other noninvasive echocardiography testing equipment, to produce images of the heart.
Essential Functions
Perform imaging and non-imaging cardiovascular evaluations which may include exercise tolerance tests, electrocardiograms, stress tests, and transesophageal echocardiography (TEE).
Prepares patient and equipment for procedure, positions patient as appropriate for procedure.
Obtains a fully executed informed consent and paperwork for procedure. Reports pertinent information to physician/provider
Provides pre and post patient/family education. Explains procedures to patient and addresses patients’ concerns.
Discusses with the physician any problems that might result in sub-standard exam or affect patient safety
Monitor patients' comfort and safety during tests, alerting physicians to abnormalities or changes in patient responses.
Utilizes universal precautions on all cases.
Performs procedures safely with minimal supervision. Requests assistance when performing unfamiliar procedure, recognizes own limitations.
Identifies and corrects potential hazards and safety measures to prevent injury including patient and occupational related hazards
Operates equipment in a safe and proper manner
Consistently performs quality Doppler and color Doppler Exams
Acquires quality Stress Echo and Dobutamine images according to physician and benchmark standards
Performs quality trans esophageal echocardiograms according to physician expectations
Provides images, data analysis, and patient information to the physician for diagnostic interpretation.
Ability to start, maintain and discontinue IVs per hospital policy
Check, test, and maintain cardiology equipment
Duties require interaction with different age groups, i.e., neonate, child, adolescents, adults, and the elderly, and requires recognition that different age groups require specialized attention or care
Supervise or train other sonographers or students
Works hours as needed and requested by leadership, takes rotating call.
Rotation between hospital and office sites
Perform other duties as assigned
Assumes responsibility for portions of quality assurance program.
Pursues ongoing continuing education
Any other duties as needed to drive to the Vision, fulfill the Mission, and abide by the Values of the organization
Qualifications
Associate's Degree Or Higher preferred
Satisfactory completion of an accredited non-invasive cardiovascular program with a focus in echocardiography studies preferred preferred
Completion of a recognized course in arrhythmia detection preferred
Pediatric cardiovascular experience preferred
Registered echocardiograph technologist experience preferred
Echocardiograph Technologist Registration within 1 Year required
RDCS - Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer preferred
RCS - Registered Cardiac Sonographer preferred
If on the job/cross training, must obtain Echocardiograph Technologist Registration within two years from the start
