Labor and Delivery Registered Nurse - St Anne Hospital, Burien, WA

Position Overview

• Specialty: Labor and Delivery (L&D)
• Location: Burien, Washington (Seattle area)
• Facility: St Anne Hospital
• Contract Length: 13 weeks
• Shift: 12-hour shifts (07:00-19:30, 19:00-07:30), 3 shifts per week, every other weekend
• Schedule Requirements:

  • Weekend: Friday & Saturday (overnights), Saturday & Sunday (days) every other weekend
  • Holiday rotation with permanent staff
  • No call or standby requirement

Unit Details

• Unit: L&D / Postpartum (PP) / Mother-Baby (MB)
• Beds:

  • 14 LDRP (Labor, Delivery, Recovery, Postpartum) rooms (laboring moms stay in the same room throughout)
  • 3 triage beds (triage experience required)
  • 2 OR suites (staffed for C-sections)
  • 5 Level II Special Care Nursery beds (babies >1800g with phototherapy, blood glucose management, opiate withdrawal, antibiotics, respiratory support)
• Birth Volume: Approximately 1000 births per year
• Nurse-to-Patient Ratios:

  • Active labor: 1:1
  • Dedicated baby nurse at every birth
  • Special Care Nursery: up to 1:3 (less based on acuity)
  • Recovered moms: 1 nurse to 2-3 couplets
  • Recovery phase: 1:1

Required Experience & Skills

• Minimum 2 years of nursing experience
• Level II nursery experience required for nursery care
• Must be able to float within the birth center (triage, L&D, baby nurse for normal newborns, postpartum, circulating in OR)
• Circulating in C-sections required; scrubbing preferred but not mandatory (designated PST available)
• Triage and transition of normal newborns
• Ability to titrate drips per physician orders (Magnesium, Pitocin)
• Monitor epidurals after anesthesia initiation and rate setting
• Must hold a Washington State RN license

Certifications Required

• BLS (Basic Life Support)
• NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)

Patient Population & Common Diagnoses

• Multiples (twins, not triplets)
• VBACs (Vaginal Birth After Cesarean)
• At-risk patients (hypertension, hemorrhage)
• Antepartum complications (preterm labor, infections)
• Post-op gynecological patients

Team & Support

• Charge nurse on each shift (does not take patient load)
• Surgical tech available 24/7 for C-sections (does not provide bedside labor care)
• OB or certified midwife in-house 24/7
• Neonatal hospitalists available 24/5, less than 30 minutes away
• Anesthesia dedicated to OB in-house
• Nurses responsible for fetal heart monitoring interpretation (no monitor techs)
• Telemetry capable unit with centralized fetal heart monitoring (Centricity Perinatal system)
• EPIC electronic medical records system

Orientation & Dress Code

• 2-day unit-specific orientation with a preceptor
• Hospital scrubs provided and required

• Floating outside the birth center is not required or expected unless agreed upon and experienced in the specialty
