Registered Nurse (Med/Tele/PCU)
Location: Bismarck, North Dakota
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Days (7a-7p)
Hours per Day: 12
Hours per Week: 36
Unit & Patient Population
- Unit type: Medical/Telemetry/Cardiac Progressive Care Unit (PCU)
- Number of beds: 32
- Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:4-5 (occasionally 5-6 on nights), PCU overflow 1:3
- Patient types: Adults and geriatrics with cardiac caths, electrophysiology studies, pacemakers, alcohol-related conditions, COVID-19 (including BiPAP), general surgical patients with cardiac history, pneumonia, acute on chronic conditions, influenza, sepsis
Required Skills & Experience
- Must have PCU experience and be able to read and interpret cardiac strips independently
- Telemetry/cardiac nursing experience required
- Experience with titrating drips (Amiodarone, Cardizem, Heparin, Nitro, Nipride, Lasix, low dose Dopamine)
- Ability to troubleshoot respiratory equipment such as BiPAP, tracheostomies, and Airvo
- Epic electronic health record experience preferred
- Open to first-time travel nurses
Orientation & Scheduling
- Unit-specific orientation: 2 shifts (12 hours each), Friday and Saturday of the first week; independent by Sunday
- Shift rotation: 7a-7p and 7p-7a; 7-7 rotation will not occur more than once weekly
- Weekend requirement: Every other weekend
- Holiday requirement: Every other holiday
- Floating: Required to float to PCU, Medical-Surgical, and some ER hold/boarding areas
- Call/standby: None
Team & Support
- Charge nurse present on each shift, occasionally takes a light patient load (2-3 patients)
- Patient care techs/nurse aides available, goal ratio 1:10
- Telemetry/monitor techs present at nurse’s station and portable monitors in rooms
Dress Code
- Any color scrubs allowed
Certifications & Licenses
- Required: BLS and ACLS certifications
- Must hold an active RN license valid in North Dakota
Additional Notes
- This is primarily a telemetry/cardiac-focused unit
- Candidates must be outside a 50-mile radius and not currently employed full-time, part-time, or PRN with any related healthcare system facilities
- Return to onsite (RTO) required within 7 days of contract start; no additional RTO extensions will be approved
Summary
This 13-week contract position is ideal for experienced Med/Tele/PCU RNs comfortable with cardiac telemetry, drip titration, and critical care skills in a 32-bed unit. The role requires strong clinical judgment, ability to read cardiac strips, and flexibility to float across related units. Orientation is structured but brief, and scheduling includes every other weekend and holiday coverage.
