Quincy, IL
About
Quincy is steeped in a rich history, revealed in its more than 3,600 buildings on the National Register of Historic Places. The magnificent East End downtown is where movers and shakers lived during the 19th century, while the architecture in the South Side German Historic District sports an evident German influence. Perched atop bluffs along the Mississippi River in western Illinois, only the water separated it from the former slave state of Missouri on the other side. In the 1830s, Quincy was an essential link in the Underground Railroad and a pivotal city on the issue of slavery. Learn more at the History Museum on the Square, set within a Romanesque-Revival-style building that once served as the Quincy Public Library. At the riverfront Clat Adams Bicentennial Park, locals and visitors enjoy a series of outdoor concerts and 4th of July fireworks each summer.
