Description

Registered Nurse (RN) – 3N Cardiac Telemetry Unit

Location: Parkersburg, West Virginia
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Nights (12-hour shifts, 1900-0730)
Hours per Week: 36 hours


Unit Overview

  • 43-bed Cardiac Telemetry unit (semi-private rooms; 9-10 private rooms)
  • Average nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:5 (can flex up to 1:6)
  • Unit includes monitor techs and serves as the central monitor station for the North Tower
  • Fast-paced environment with approximately 8-12 admissions and discharges daily
  • Teamwork is emphasized; nurses are encouraged to ask for help when needed
  • Unit clerk available to assist with administrative tasks

Patient Population & Care

  • Common diagnoses: post heart catheterization, TR bands, congestive heart failure (CHF), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), post pacemaker (no external pacers), medical management or awaiting CABG consult, arrhythmias
  • Occasional use of high flow oxygen in certain rooms; BiPAP and CPAP used only for supportive therapy and temporary situations
  • Patients dependent on BiPAP/CPAP typically transferred to higher acuity units

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Must be able to read cardiac strips; RN’s read strips alongside monitor techs
  • RN’s titrate only Heparin drips; Cardizem and Amiodarone are not titrated
  • Occasionally titrate Lasix or Bumex
  • Responsible for admissions and discharges
  • May be asked to float within the hospital, including ICU (rare) and Stepdown units, but only within skillset
  • Charge nurse role available; night charge always takes patient assignment; traveler may be asked to take charge if comfortable

Staffing & Support

  • Patient Care Technicians (PCTs) assist with ADLs, fingerstick blood sugars (FSBS), and EKGs when able
  • PCT ratios goal: 1:8, can flex up to 1:12-18 depending on call-offs
  • RN’s must be able to perform EKGs if PCTs are unavailable

Scheduling & Time Off

  • 12-hour shifts: 0700-1930 (days) and 1900-0730 (nights)
  • Self-scheduling allowed with accommodation for block scheduling if unit needs are met
  • Weekend requirement for travelers: every other weekend (EOW)
    • Night weekend shifts: Friday through Monday
    • Day weekend shifts: Saturday and Sunday
  • Holiday coverage primarily by permanent staff; travelers may be required if unit needs dictate
  • Call or standby is rare but may be included in contract

Orientation & Training

  • 1 day computer training
  • 1 day floor shadowing with preceptor
  • 3rd day independent practice on unit
  • Unit is accustomed to new graduates and provides teaching support

Required Certifications & Licensure

  • Current BLS (AHA)
  • Current ACLS (AHA)
  • Must submit an unexpired driver’s license

Dress Code

  • Royal blue scrubs required
  • Scrub jackets allowed only if actual scrub jackets (no hoodies or sweatshirts)

Experience & Skills

  • Comfortable caring for cardiac telemetry patients and reading cardiac strips
  • Ability to titrate Heparin drips
  • Prior travel experience is not specified as required
