Description

Registered Nurse – Emergency Room (ER)

Facility: University of Maryland Charles Regional Medical Center
Location: 5 Garrett Ave, La Plata, MD 20646
Start Date: December 1, 2025 (or ASAP)
Duration: 13 Weeks (option to extend up to 26 weeks)
Shift: Nights – 3x12 Hours (7:00 PM – 7:30 AM)
Schedule: Every Other Weekend
Submittal Type: Auto Offer

 

Position Overview

The Emergency Room at the University of Maryland Charles Regional Medical Center is a high-acuity, fast-paced ED caring for patients across all age groups and diagnoses. Nurses must be skilled in rapid triage, trauma stabilization, cardiac monitoring, emergency interventions, and acute patient management.

The ER team provides comprehensive care for a broad range of medical emergencies, including cardiac, respiratory, neurological, psychiatric, and pediatric conditions. Candidates should be proficient with IV therapy, medication administration, and dysrhythmia interpretation.

This facility uses Epic for charting, and prior experience is preferred.

 

Requirements

Licensure:
Active Maryland RN License or Compact License – Required (Must be in hand at submission)

Experience:
Minimum 2 years of recent ER experience – Preferred
Will consider candidates with 1+ year of strong emergency experience – Accepted

Travel Experience:
First-time travelers – Accepted

Local Radius Rule:
Locals within 50 miles – Not Accepted

Teaching Hospital Experience: – Not required
Community Hospital Experience: – Required

 

Certifications

  • BLS (AHA) – Required
  • ACLS (AHA) – Required
  • PALS (AHA) – Required
  • CPI (Calm Every Storm) – Required
  • NIHSS – Required

Core Skills & Competencies

Emergency Care Skills

  • Rapid assessment and triage
  • Management of trauma and medical emergencies
  • Cardiac monitoring and dysrhythmia interpretation
  • Obtaining and interpreting 12-lead EKGs
  • Blood product administration
  • Starting and maintaining IVs and central line care
  • Procedural and moderate sedation
  • Management of ventilated patients, CPAP/BIPAP
  • ABG interpretation
  • Stroke and STEMI response protocols

  • Pediatric emergencies (asthma, head injury, seizure, near drowning, infections)
  • Psychiatric emergencies (suicidal patients, violent behavior, drug overdose)
  • Orthopedic care (splinting and fracture management)
  • Respiratory support and airway management

Daily Census: ~130 visits/day
Patient Age Groups: Neonates, Infants, Pediatrics, Adolescents, Adults, Geriatrics
Patient Ratios: Days: 1:4 | Nights: 1:4 | Weekends: 1:4
Float Required: Yes – within hospital and within scope
Weekend Coverage: Every other weekend
Pre-approved RTO: Maximum 1 request (must be submitted at time of submission)
Orientation Hours: 36
Scheduling Type: Self-scheduling
Block Schedule: Not available
