Job Summary
The Inpatient Rehab RN Clinical Nurse is a proactive member of the interdisciplinary rehab team, providing high-quality, safe, and individualized care to patients recovering from illness, injury, surgery, or complex medical events. This role supports patients through intensive therapy, medical management, and ongoing assessment within the Shared Governance Model and Professional Practice Model.
The RN upholds the Georgia Professional Nurse Practice Act and the ANA Scope & Standards, advocating for patients while contributing to service excellence and high-quality outcomes.
Core Responsibilities & Essential Functions
1. Exemplary Practice and Outcomes
- Performs the full Nursing Process—assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, evaluation—to support patient rehabilitation goals and clinical needs.
- Provides relationship-based, patient-centered care tailored to age, diagnosis, mobility level, and rehabilitation requirements.
- Engages patients and families in goal-setting, progress updates, and teaching to support functional independence.
- Practices using evidence-based rehab nursing standards and collaborates with therapy teams to optimize patient outcomes.
2. Teamwork and Collaboration
- Coordinates safe, high-quality rehab care using interdisciplinary communication including team rounding, care planning, and case review.
- Maintains accurate and timely documentation while promoting a respectful and inclusive team culture.
- Supports recruitment and retention through collaboration, professionalism, and teamwork.
- Participates in performance improvement projects and shared governance.
3. Professional Development & Initiative
- Completes all required competencies, mandatory education, and rehab-specific training.
- Serves as a preceptor or mentor to new nurses or students, contributing to workforce development.
- Demonstrates initiative in continuous learning and maintaining a positive, professional environment.
4. Evidence-Based Practice & Research
- Applies evidence-based rehabilitation nursing practices and participates in quality improvement initiatives.
- Upholds organizational policies, regulatory compliance, and patient safety standards (including TJC safety goals).
- Engages in data collection and uses research-based evidence to enhance clinical decision-making and care planning.
5. Resources & Support
- Plans proactively for patient care needs across the rehabilitation continuum—from admission through transition to home or next level of care.
- Collaborates with care managers, therapists, and interdisciplinary teams to reduce preventable complications and improve functional outcomes.
- Supports efficient use of human and material resources and helps improve workflows and protocols.
- Performs other duties as assigned and adheres to organizational policies and code of conduct.
Required Minimum Education
- Associate Degree in Nursing or Nursing Diploma required
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred
Required Licensure & Certifications
(All required at hire unless otherwise noted)
- Registered Nurse (RN) – Single State or Multi-State Compact
- Basic Life Support (BLS – AHA or ARC)
Required Minimum Experience
- Minimum 2 years of RN experience required
- Direct patient care experience preferred
- Rehabilitation nursing experience is a plus but not required
Required Skills
- Strong assessment, care-planning, and clinical decision-making abilities
- Excellent communication, collaboration, and patient education skills
- Ability to work in a fast-paced rehab environment and manage multiple priorities
- Ability to respond to patient changes/emergencies calmly and professionally
- Strong critical thinking, organization, and computer documentation skills
