Registered Nurse – Medical Surgical/Telemetry

Location: Omaha, Nebraska
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Night (3 shifts per week, 12 hours each, 7:00 PM – 7:30 AM)
Hours per Week: 36 hours

Unit & Patient Population

• Medical Surgical/Telemetry unit with 20 beds, including orthopedic patients (Total Knee and Hip replacements, complicated orthopedic cases).
• Patient diagnoses may include pulmonary, sepsis, GI, endocrine, cardiac, renal, and psychiatric illnesses.
• Unit split by floors:

  • 7th floor: Medical/Surgical patients with behavioral health conditions (e.g., detox, dementia), secured floor.
• Must be comfortable caring for behavioral health patients; safety and de-escalation training provided.
• Drip infusions required on all floors.
• Patient ratios: 1:5 (day), 1:6 (night), occasionally 1:7 nights (rare).

Requirements & Qualifications

• Valid RN license in Nebraska
• Minimum 1 year of telemetry experience within the last year
• One completed travel assignment
• BLS issued by American Heart Association
• NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) certification
• NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale) certification
• Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
• Experience with Epic electronic health record system

Scheduling & Time Off

• Option for 36 or 48-hour shifts.
• Weekend shifts: 4 out of 8 possible in a 4-week period (days: Sat/Sun; nights: Fri/Sat night).
• RTO (Request Time Off) blackout dates: June 11–22, 2026 (due to College World Series).
• Up to two weeks of RTO permitted, must be submitted with application; additional requests at manager discretion.

Facility & Work Environment

• Large academic medical center with 718 acute-care beds.
• Team includes CNAs, care techs, transport team, paramedics, and some LPNs.
• Safety training and support for behavioral health patient care provided.
• Parking permits available (~$55/month) or daily parking rates.

Compliance & Onboarding Requirements

• Government-issued photo ID required.
• Background check within 30 days of start, including multi-county and federal checks.
• Ongoing SAM and OIG checks every 30 days.
• Education verification required.
• State-specific abuse/neglect registry check required.
• Physical exam and fit mask test within 1 year, updated annually.
• Immunizations and health screenings required:

  • Tdap within last 10 years
  • Negative TB test or chest x-ray with questionnaire annually
  • 2 MMR vaccines or positive titers (boosters if needed)
  • Hepatitis B titer or declination
  • Varicella vaccines or positive titer (boosters if needed)
  • Drug screen within 60 days of start, updated annually
• Flu vaccine preferred (documentation or declination required).
• COVID vaccine preferred; exemptions accepted.
• Annual skills checklist required.
• Two professional references from the past 2 years required.

Additional Notes

• Travelers are first to float to meet staffing needs.
• Scrubs with facility branding are mandatory; details provided upon confirmation.
• Eye exam required only for OR travelers (not applicable here).
• Facility enforces strict safety and security protocols, especially on behavioral health floors.

This position is ideal for experienced RNs comfortable with medical-surgical and telemetry patients, including those with behavioral health needs, who are flexible with floating and holiday shifts in a large academic hospital setting.
