Job Opportunity: Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) - Pediatrics

Location: Charleston, South Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Position Details

  • Specialty: Respiratory / Neuro Diagnostics (Pediatrics)
  • Shift: Night shift, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 PM – 7:30 AM)
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
  • On-call: Not required
  • Floating: May float within scope depending on experience; no floating to sister facilities

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Respiratory Therapist license in South Carolina
  • Minimum 2 years of experience as a Respiratory Therapist, including experience within the last year
  • Experience working with Pediatric, Neonate, and Infant patients
  • Certifications:
    • Basic Life Support (BLS)
    • National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) certification
    • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
    • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP)

Work Environment & Facility Highlights

  • Teaching hospital with Magnet status and Level 1 Trauma designation
  • Total staffed beds: 865
  • Charting system: Epic
  • Parking available with a one-time pass fee for nights and weekends

Scheduling & Work Conditions

  • Facility may call off 1 shift per 2 weeks (guaranteed hours with possible call-offs)
  • Radius rule applies: 60 miles; local candidates considered case-by-case
  • Block scheduling may be accommodated with prior approval (not guaranteed)
  • Hurricane season (June-November) may require emergency response team participation

Required Documentation & Compliance

  • Copy of Driver’s License and Social Security Card
  • Completed and accurate I-9 form with E-Verify attestation
  • Annual background check covering all locations lived/worked in past 7 years, including multiple specific searches (SSN trace, state and national criminal, sex offender registry, FACIS 3, international if applicable)
  • Education verification or diploma/transcripts as placeholder
  • Proof of 2 clinical references or hospital evaluations
  • Employment history verification for last 3 clinical employers
  • Clear, passport-style badge photo (frontal view, business casual attire) required before start
  • Facility-specific orientation modules and first day instructions must be completed prior to orientation
  • Radiation badge required if applicable to unit (not typical for Respiratory Therapy)

Health & Safety Requirements

  • Initial physical exam and annual updates attesting ability to meet physical demands
  • Fit test for N95 mask within 90 days prior to start, renewed annually
  • Immunizations and titers required:
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (within 10 years or declination form)
    • Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella (positive titer or vaccination series with boosters if needed)
    • Hepatitis B (titer, vaccine series, or declination)
  • Negative TB test (T-spot or Q-Gold) within 90 days or documented history with chest x-ray as applicable
  • Annual TB questionnaire completion
  • 10-panel drug screen within 90 days prior to start
  • COVID-19 vaccination highly preferred; if declined, must complete vaccination declination form
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or medical/religious exemption required during flu season (Aug 1 – Mar 31) with documentation uploaded by December 5 deadline

Competency Requirements

  • Medication/pharmacology competency exam required (pediatric-specific preferred but regular acceptable)
  • Competency exam for operating room if applicable
  • Color blindness testing required prior to start

Additional Notes

  • Pending state license accepted only if South Carolina RRT license is in hand at start
  • All requested time off (RTO) must be submitted with application and approved based on unit needs
  • Facility may require participation in emergency response during hurricane season (June-November)
  • Travelers must upload COVID and flu vaccine documentation into the facility’s system prior to start
