Job Opportunity: Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) - Travel/Contract
Location
- Charleston, South Carolina
Position Details
- Specialty: Respiratory / Neuro Diagnostics
- Employment Type: Travel/Contract
- Shift: Day shift, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 AM – 7:30 PM)
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
- On-call: Not required
- Floating: Possible floating only to main hospital adult population within same policies and equipment; no floating to sister facilities
- Contract Length: 13 weeks
Patient Population & Facility Highlights
- Teaching hospital with Magnet status and Level 1 Trauma designation
- Total staffed beds: 865
- Facility uses Epic for charting
- Caribbean Blue scrub color
- Parking available with nominal cost for nights and weekends
- Nearly 200 beds at the specific tower, including:
- 2 ICUs (Cardiovascular ICU with 21 beds; Medical-Surgical ICU with 18 beds)
- 2 step-down floors
- 4 general acute care floors
- 21-bed emergency department
- Patient types include:
- Postoperative cardiac, thoracic, and complex vascular surgery patients
- Heart and lung transplant, durable LVAD, temporary mechanical circulatory support
- ECMO, IABP, Impella support
- Complex cardiology cases, post cardiac arrest, acute myocardial infarction, decompensated heart failure
- Medical-surgical ICU patients with ARDS, septic shock, hematologic and oncologic emergencies, GI hemorrhage, pulmonary hypertension, perforated viscous
Required Qualifications
- Valid Respiratory Care Practitioner license in South Carolina
- Minimum 2 years of experience as a Respiratory Care Practitioner
- Experience working with adult patients within the last year
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification
Additional Requirements
- Radius rule: Must live within 60 miles; local candidates considered case-by-case
- Guaranteed hours: Facility may call off 1 shift per 2 weeks
- Block scheduling may be accommodated with prior approval (not guaranteed)
- Hurricane season (June-November) may require emergency response team participation; travelers should consider this before accepting assignments during this period
Compliance and Documentation
- Background checks including 7 years of history, criminal, sex offender registry, and federal exclusions required
- Education verification required; diploma or transcripts accepted as placeholder if needed
- Drug screening: 10-panel drug screen within 90 days of start, no instant tests accepted
- References: Proof of 2 clinical references required
- Employment history: Verification of last 3 clinical employers required; attestation letters accepted only if other verification methods exhausted
- Competency exams and medication/pharmacology competency required as applicable
- Color blindness testing required prior to start
- Physical exam: Initial and annual physical exam attesting ability to meet job demands required
- Fit testing: N95 fit test within 90 days prior to start, renewed annually; specific mask models required
- Immunizations and Titers:
- Tdap within 10 years or declination form required
- Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella: Positive titer or vaccination series required; low titers require boosters
- Hepatitis B: Titer, vaccine series, or declination required
- Annual TB questionnaire required; negative TB test (T-spot or Q-Gold) within 90 days preferred unless recent positive with appropriate follow-up
- Seasonal flu vaccination or medical/religious exemption required during flu season (August 1 – March 31); declinations not accepted
- COVID-19 vaccination highly preferred; if declined, must complete vaccination declination form

- Orientation modules (approx. 2 hours) must be completed prior to start; failure to complete results in being sent home
- First Day Instructions (FDI) and OurDay platform used for onboarding and vaccine documentation
- Badge photo required prior to start (passport-style, solid light background, business casual attire)

- Respiratory therapists may be required to float only within adult units with consistent policies and equipment
