Emergency Department Nurse - Traveler (Backfill)

Location: Augusta, Georgia
Facility: AU Medical Center (AU Medical Center, Inc.)
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Overview

  • Provide emergency nursing care including assessment, documentation, and development of patient care plans in a fast-paced ED setting.
  • Perform triage using ESI, administer medications, start IVs, collect blood cultures, insert urinary catheters, obtain EKGs, monitor patient status, administer blood, and assist with procedural sedation.
  • Manage patients with respiratory distress/failure, code blue, code strokes, code STEMI, trauma, and sepsis.
  • Use equipment such as Accudose medication dispensing, Cerner charting (FirstNet) with medication scanning, Phillips monitors and EKG, ISTATS, Accucheck glucometer, chest tube drains, and restraints.

Required Experience & Certifications

  • Minimum 2 years recent Emergency Department experience.
  • Certifications required: BLS, ACLS, PALS.
  • TNCC certification preferred.
  • Recent level 1 or level 2 trauma experience required.

Schedule & Shifts

  • 36 hours per week.
  • Shifts include:
    • 3p-3a (1 nurse)
    • 11a-11p (2 nurses)
    • 7a-7p (3 nurses)
    • 7p-7a (4 nurses)
  • Work every other weekend.
  • Required to work 2-3 holidays (Thanksgiving, Day after Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve, New Year’s Day).
  • One 24-hour call shift every 4 weeks.

Unit Details

  • Emergency Department has 71 beds:
    • 8 critical care rooms
    • 25 acute care rooms
    • 5 Fast Track rooms
    • 9 behavioral health bays (usually staffed by psych nurses unless called in)
    • 15 pediatric ED rooms (usually staffed by pediatric ED nurses unless called in)
    • 9 ED observation beds (usually staffed by observation nurses unless called in)
  • Nurse-to-patient ratios:
    • Critical care: 1:2 or 1:3
    • Fast Track (vertical care): 1:7
    • Acute and observation pods: 1:4 or 1:5

Floating

  • Possible float to:
    • ED behavioral health
    • Pediatric ED
    • ED observation

Orientation & Training

  • One-week preceptor-based ED-specific orientation to adult acute care pods.
  • Completion of ED-specific computer modules, ISTAT, and waived test training.
  • Orientation competency checklist required.
  • Understanding of ED and ED observation unit policies, patient flow, pathways, and protocols.
  • Ability to work independently with multiple patients and manage inpatient admission holds in the ED.
  • If TNCC certified and trauma education completed, may be assigned to critical care.

Dress Code

  • Branded Navy Blue Cherokee scrubs (available on campus).

Additional Notes for Candidates

  • Must hold a Georgia or compact RN license.
  • Must be willing and able to cover all areas of the ED (Psych, Peds, Observation).
  • Previous travel experience preferred but not required.
