Emergency Department Nurse - Traveler (Backfill)
Location: Augusta, Georgia
Facility: AU Medical Center, AU Medical Center, Inc.
Job Overview
- Provide emergency nursing care including assessment, documentation, and development of care plans based on patient/family needs in a fast-paced ED setting.
- Perform hemodynamic monitoring, airway management, dysrhythmia recognition, CPR, and body-fluid monitoring.
- Conduct triage using ESI, administer medications, start IVs, collect blood cultures, insert urinary catheters, obtain EKGs, monitor patient status, administer blood, and assist with procedural sedation.
- Treat patients with respiratory distress/failure, code blue, code strokes, code STEMI, traumas, and sepsis.
Equipment & Systems
- Accudose medication dispensing
- Cerner charting (FirstNet) with medication scanning
- Phillips monitors and EKG
- ISTATS, Accucheck glucometer, waived tests
- Chest tube drains (atrium)
- Use of restraints
Experience & Certifications
- Minimum 2 years recent Emergency Department experience required
- Required certifications: BLS, ACLS, PALS
- TNCC preferred
Schedule & Shift Details
- 36 hours per week
- Work every other weekend
- 2-3 holidays per year (Thanksgiving, Day after Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve, New Year’s Day)
- One 24-hour call shift every 4 weeks
- Shift needs:
- 1 nurse 3p-3a
- 2 nurses 11a-11p
- 3 nurses 7a-7p
- 4 nurses 7p-7a
Floating & Unit Details
- Possible floating to: ED behavioral health, Pediatric ED, ED observation units
- ED bed size: 71 total beds
- 8 critical care rooms
- 25 acute rooms
- 5 Fast Track rooms
- 9 behavioral health bays (usually psych nurses)
- 15 pediatric ED rooms (usually pediatric nurses)
- 9 ED observation beds (usually observation nurses)
Nurse-to-Patient Ratios
- Critical care: 1:2 or 1:3
- Fast Track (vertical care): 1:7
- Acute and observation pods: 1:4 or 1:5
Dress Code
- Branded Navy Blue Cherokee scrubs (available on campus)
Orientation & Training
- One-week preceptor-based ED-specific orientation to adult acute care pods
- Completion of ED-specific computer modules, ISTAT, and waived test training
- Orientation competency checklist required
- Understanding of ED and ED Observation Unit policies, patient flow, and protocols
- Ability to work independently with multiple patients and manage inpatient admission holds in the ED
- TNCC certified and trauma education completed nurses may be assigned to critical care areas
