Job Overview
- Fast-paced, high acuity Special Maternity Care high-risk OB unit
- Patient population includes obstetrical patients 16 weeks and greater for intrapartum, high-risk antepartum, and postpartum care, including under 16 weeks high-risk patients
- Unit includes obstetrical triage for screening and outpatient procedures (antenatal fetal surveillance, IV hydration, medication administration)
- Scheduled and unscheduled Cesarean births and rescue cervical cerclage performed
- Average workload: 2:1 nurse-to-patient ratio, ~20 births in 24 hours, 30-40 admits, 40 visits/day, 20 rooms
Shift Details
- 12-hour night shifts: 18:45 - 07:15
- 48-hour shifts may be offered (no overtime until after 48 hours billed)
- Weekend requirement: minimum every other weekend, 6 weekend shifts per 6-week schedule
- Float required as needed
- May be required to precept/orient new staff
Required Skills and Experience
- Minimum 2 years experience preferred; 3 years preferred due to unit complexity
- Experience in large/high volume settings preferred
- First-time travelers accepted if experienced in similar settings
- Skills: Circulate in OR, sterile vaginal exams, immediate newborn care
- Certifications:
- BCLS (Basic Cardiac Life Support)
- AWHONN Intermediate (Association of Women's Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses)
- NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
Unit Systems and Orientation
- Systems used: PYXIS, EPIC, SBAR
- Orientation length: 24 hours
- Scrubs provided (blue)
Patient Diagnoses and Procedures
- Care for obstetrical patients including high-risk antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum
- Obstetrical triage for screening and outpatient procedures
- Cesarean births (scheduled and unscheduled)
- Rescue cervical cerclage
Important Notes
- Return to Office (RTO) after booking is NOT allowed and cannot be worked out onsite
- Call-offs or additional RTO may lead to cancellation and Do Not Rehire (DNR) status
- Unit is very fast-paced and busier than typical maternity units; 48-hour contracts may be challenging
- Strong preference for RNs with OR circulate experience
Required Documentation and Compliance
- Background check within 6 months required
- Drug testing (9 panel, within 6 months)
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year (or proof of past positive with documentation)
- Required immunizations and health documents including:
- Flu vaccination or approved exemption (mask required if exempt)
- Hepatitis B (or facility-specific declination if titer negative/equivocal)
- Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella (per standard requirements)
- Certifications and competencies as required by facility and Aya Healthcare standards
- Photo for badge (passport style, solid white background, business attire) required ASAP after signing contract
- Completion of hospital policies and orientation forms required
Additional Requirements
- Color blindness test within 1 year
- Medication/pharmacology competency exam (effective 01/24/2025 for new contracts)
- Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam for applicable specialties
- EFM (Electronic Fetal Monitoring) certification through AWHONN
- HIPAA Safety Manual acknowledgment
- Other facility-specific trainings and acknowledgments as required
