Job Description
- Unit: Special Maternity Care High Risk OB Unit (Birthing Care Unit)
- Patient Population: Obstetrical patients 16 weeks and greater for intrapartum, high-risk antepartum, and postpartum care. Also cares for under 16 weeks high-risk patients.
- Patient Volume: Average 20 births in 24 hours, 30-40 admits, 40 visits/day, 20 rooms
- Shift: 12-hour nights (18:45 - 07:15)
- Ratios: 2:1 nurse-to-patient ratio
- Float Requirement: Float as needed within the unit
- Weekend Requirement: Minimum every other weekend (6 weekend shifts per 6-week schedule)
- Orientation: 24 hours
- Scrubs: Provided (blue)
- Precepting: May be required to precept/orient new staff
Required Skills and Certifications
- Experience: Minimum 2 years preferred; 3 years ideal. Unit accepts 1st-time travelers with experience in large/high volume settings.
- Skills: Circulate in OR, sterile vaginal exams, competent in immediate newborn care
- Certifications:
- BCLS (Basic Cardiac Life Support)
- AWHONN Intermediate (Association of Women's Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses)
- NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
Unit Details
- Very fast-paced, high acuity environment
- Strong preference for RNs with OR circulate experience
- Uses PYXIS, EPIC, and SBAR systems
Patient Care and Procedures
- Obstetrical triage for screening and outpatient procedures (antenatal fetal surveillance, IV hydration, medication administration)
- Scheduled and unscheduled Cesarean births
- Rescue cervical cerclage performed
Important Policies
- RTO (Return to Office) after booking is NOT allowed and cannot be worked out onsite. Call-offs or additional RTO may lead to cancellation and Do Not Rehire status.
- Interview with manager required before offer
Required Documentation and Compliance
- Background check within 6 months
- Drug testing (9 panel, within 6 months)
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year (or proof of past positive with documentation)
- Immunizations: Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Hepatitis B (with facility-specific declination if applicable)
- Flu vaccination or approved exemption (mask required if exempt)
- COVID-19 vaccine no longer required for travel staff
- Various facility-specific forms including photo for badge, emergency contact, hospital policies acknowledgment, and others
- Competency exams including medication, color blindness, dysrhythmia/EKG (time sensitive for certain specialties)
- Education verification and licensure verification as applicable
Additional Notes
- 48-hour shifts may be offered but are not recommended due to unit busyness; no overtime until after 48 hours billed
- Candidates must complete Non-Novant Health Worker Orientation modules prior to start
- Photo for badge must be passport style on white background, business attire, no head coverings except glasses
- Radiation badges required for certain specialties (not applicable for this RN role unless otherwise specified)
This position is ideal for experienced RNs comfortable in a high-acuity, fast-paced maternity care environment with strong OB and newborn care skills.
