Registered Nurse – Medical Surgical (Travel/Contract)
Location: Seattle, Washington
Duration: 13 weeks
Shift: Nights, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 PM – 7:30 AM)
Patient Ratio:
- Days: 1:3-4
- Nights: 1:4-5
Job Description
- Unit primarily orthopedic trauma (spine injury, femoral fractures, traction), but also includes neuro, surgery, vascular, urology, and gynecology patients.
- Facility is a Level I Trauma, Magnet, and Teaching hospital.
- Charting system: Epic (with hard stops).
- Scrub color: Any solid color; light blue scrubs provided on unit.
- Onsite parking available with fees; offsite parking with shuttle service available on weekdays.
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Washington State
- Minimum 2 years of Medical-Surgical nursing experience, with at least some experience within the last year
- BLS (Basic Life Support) certification issued by the American Heart Association
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
Competency & Testing Requirements
- Medication/Pharmacology competency exam with minimum 80% in dosage calculations.
- Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam required for certain units; check unit-specific requirements.
- Orientation testing is pass/fail with 80% passing score; failure results in cancellation.
- Additional competency exams may be required depending on unit assignment.
Background & Screening
- 7-year criminal background check required within 45 days of start, including nationwide and sex offender searches.
- Education verification required.
- WA WATCH search required.
- Drug screen within past 12 months required (instant acceptable).
- Physical exam within 1 year prior to start required by agency (not by facility).
- Mask fit test within 12 months required (specific mask models).
- Various facility-specific acknowledgments and forms must be signed (e.g., license acknowledgment, equipment safety, policies and procedures, job description).
Health & Immunization Requirements
- Tdap vaccine within 10 years or declination on file.
- Negative TB test (Qgold, Tspot, or 2-step PPD within 90 days) or chest X-ray if positive TB history.
- Annual TB questionnaire required.
- Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella: Titer or 2 vaccines required; boosters or declination accepted.
- Hepatitis B: Positive titer or completed vaccine series with re-titer; declination accepted.
- Varicella: Titer or 2 vaccines required; boosters or declination accepted.
- Seasonal flu vaccine or declination required during flu season (Sept 29 – Mar 31).
- COVID vaccination or declination required for tracking.
- Additional vaccines (e.g., meningococcal) required for specific roles (e.g., microbiology lab techs).
Additional Notes
- First-time travelers can be screened but preference given to seasoned travelers.
- Block scheduling is not accommodated.
- Candidates must complete facility-specific orientation modules prior to start.
- Badge photo required (professional, waist-up, clear lighting, simple background).
- Suicide prevention training required for multi-state licensed nurses working in Washington.
- Various facility-specific forms and acknowledgments must be completed and signed prior to or at orientation.
This position offers an opportunity to work in a high-acuity, trauma-focused environment with a diverse patient population in a prestigious Level I Trauma and Magnet-designated hospital. Night shift experience and flexibility for weekend work are essential.
