Registered Nurse (RN) – ICU (Med Surg ICU)

Location: Omaha, Nebraska
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Nights (12-hour shifts)
Hours per Week: 36 hours guaranteed

Unit & Patient Population

• Med Surg ICU with 34 beds
• Nurse-to-patient ratios:

  • ICU: 1:1 to 1:2
  • PCU: 1:4 to 1:5
  • Med Surg: 1:5 to 1:6
• Patient types include adults and pediatrics over 15 years old
• Common diagnoses: neuro surgery, respiratory failure, ARDS, MODS, sepsis, stroke, cardiogenic shock, renal failure (CRRT), general surgery, psych/OD, GI bleeds, cancer-specific surgeries (e.g., esophagectomy), internal chemo administration
• Advanced monitoring and equipment: CVPs, arterial lines, Swan-Ganz catheters, EV-1000, ICP monitoring, Zoll Thermoguard for hypothermia, Bell Mont rapid transfuser

Responsibilities

• Titrate drips including vasopressors, paralytics, narcotics, sedation, and antiarrhythmics
• Read and interpret cardiac telemetry strips (Draeger heart monitoring system) without telemetry tech support
• Attend Rapid Response Teams (RRTs) and Codes as charge nurse (charge nurse takes assignment)
• Float to all inpatient units except Maternity and NICU
• Collaborate with attendings, fellows, residents, and student providers in a team environment

Required Qualifications

• Minimum 2 years recent ICU experience
• Current certifications: BLS, ACLS, NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
• Valid driver’s license at time of application (used to verify candidate is within 50-mile radius)
• Pass a 90% or higher on a pass/fail open book skills exam during orientation
• Compliance with fingernail policy: artificial nails prohibited in patient care areas

Orientation & Scheduling

• Unit-specific orientation: 2 shifts
• Scheduling determined by manager based on unit needs (no self-scheduling)
• Weekend requirement: every other weekend
• Holiday requirement: 2 out of 3 major holidays or every other holiday, based on unit needs
• Scrub color: Navy Blue

• Successful nurses demonstrate critical thinking, positive attitude, teamwork, willingness to help, and strong communication skills
• Radius rule: candidates must live within 50 miles and cannot be currently employed full-time, part-time, or PRN with certain affiliated facilities
• Return to office (RTO) required within 7 days of contract start; no additional RTO extensions allowed
