About

The Certified Phlebotomist Technologist (CPT) certification offered by the National Phlebotomy Association (NPA) is a professional credential for individuals skilled in the practice of phlebotomy – the process of collecting blood samples from patients for medical testing. This certification demonstrates expertise in venipuncture, capillary puncture, specimen handling, patient communication and adherence to safety and health regulations.

Eligibility

  • Completed an Allied Health program that included venipuncture techniques and a clinical practical

    • Education program must award 16 continuing education units or include at least 160 contact hours of lecture time excluding phlebotomy practical

    • Training must include at least 200 hours of practical experience on mannequins, clinical practicum or a mixture of both

Required documentation must be submitted before exam scheduling and includes:

  • Transcript evaluation demonstrating completed courses

  • Certificates of achievement (optional)

Course Format

Exam Format

The CPT exam is a 2-hour written exam. To achieve a passing score, candidates must score 70% on the written and practical parts of the exam. Candidates receive their test scores in the mail within 8 to 10 weeks from the following month after taking the exam.

Unsuccessful candidates may retake the exam up to 2 more times, for 3 attempts total. After 3 failed attempts, the applicant is no longer eligible for further NPA exams.

In Person

The CPT exam through the NPA is currently only available to take in person.

Renewal

Current CPTs through the NPA renew their certifications annually through their NPA Member Portal.

Renewal Fees

Annual CPT renewal is $100.

Continuing Education

CPTs must complete 1.8 hours of continuing education each year.
