About

The Advanced Public Health Nurse - Board Certified (PHNA-BC), awarded by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) has been retired and is available for renewal only.

This credential can be renewed every 5 years and may continue to be used as long as renewal requirements are met.

Fees

The renewal fee is $250 for American Nurses Association members, $295 for American Public Health Association members, and $350 for non-members.

Certification

Renewal

All applicants must complete 75 continuing education hours. These hours must include one or more of the eight renewal categories and be directly related to public health specialty. Advanced practice nurses have an additional requirement of completing 25 hours of pharmacotherapeutics as part of their mandatory 75 credit hours.

The 8 categories for renewal include the following:

  1. Continuing education (a minimum of 51% of the 75 credit hours must be directly related to the certification specialty)

  2. Academic credits

  3. Presentations

  4. Evidence-based practice or quality improvement project, publication, or research

  5. Complete 120 hours as a preceptor in the specialty

  6. Professional service (2 years of volunteer activities in a healthcare setting related to the specialty)

  7. A minimum of 1,000 practice hours in the specialty

  8. Passing score on an examination or portfolio

Category 8 is mandatory for those renewing 2 years after the expiration of their certification.

Applications can be submitted online during the 12 months before the certification expires.
