Tech Prod Verification Cert (PTCB) - Technician Product Verification Certificate

The Technician Product Verification Certificate offered by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) is designed for pharmacy technicians who are involved in the verification of medications before dispensing. This certification demonstrates a technician’s expertise in ensuring the accuracy of prescription orders, including verifying dosages, quantities, and the correct medication, to improve patient safety and reduce dispensing errors. Earning this certificate also takes candidates one step closer to becoming a PTCB Advanced Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT-Adv).

Eligibility

Candidates must hold an active PTCB Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) Credential and qualify under one of the following pathways:

• Pathway 1: Completion of a PTCB-Recognized Technician Product Verification Education/Training Program

• Pathway 2: Completion of a state board-approved validation program

Completion Time: 1 hour and 45 minutes

Exam Format

The Technician Product Verification Certificate exam simulates product verification in health system and community settings ensuring a unique assessment of candidates’ knowledge and attention to detail. The exam includes 120 questions containing a prescription or order label and product images for verification. Questions are a mixture of items with errors in one of the three areas and items without any errors.

Candidates must determine whether the product and quantity are correct based on the label and if there’s acceptable product integrity. The Technician Product Verification Certificate exam tests candidates’ expertise in:

• Identifying correct product names, strengths and dosage forms

• Calculating the amount to dispense based on prescribed dosage and frequency

• Evaluating the integrity of product characteristics

Candidates have 1 hour and 45 minutes to complete the exam, but the total appointment time is 2 hours to leave time for a pre-exam tutorial and post-exam survey. 

The Technician Product Verification Certificate exam receives a scaled score between 0 to 400, with 300 or higher required to pass. Candidates receive their official score report immediately following completion of the exam. 

Passing candidates can download their certificate through the Credley Platform and receive a digital badge and certificate of achievement. Unsuccessful candidates may retake the exam after paying the full exam fee again without any waiting period between attempts.

The Technician Product Verification Certificate program doesn’t require renewal.

Continuing education is required to maintain PTCB CPhT Certification but not to maintain the Technician Product Verification Certificate.
