Baylor University Medical Center showcases its Christian roots through its mission statement regarding patient care. BUMC states it “exists to serve all people by providing personalized health and wellness through exemplary care, education and research as a Christian ministry of healing.” The focus on providing care continues with its vision statement: “To be the most trusted name in giving and receiving safe, quality, compassionate healthcare.”

Founded in 1903 as Good Samaritan Hospital with a 25-bed capacity, Baylor University Medical Center changed its name to Texas Baptist Memorial Sanitarium one year later. It wasn’t until 1959 that the hospital became known as the Baylor University Medical Center we know today. Since its foundation, BUMC has grown to 1,025 licensed beds.

The hospital was once home to a medical school, Baylor University College of Medicine (now known as Baylor College of Medicine), but parted ways in 1943 when the school moved to Houston. In 2020, Baylor University Medical Center reestablished academic affiliations with Baylor College of Medicine. In addition, it established a new alliance with Texas A&M University to train future clinicians and continue to develop groundbreaking medical research.

BUMC became part of the Scott & White Healthcare system in 2013 to form Baylor Scott & White Health, becoming recognized as the flagship hospital of Baylor Scott & White Health – North Texas.  Baylor Scott & White Health is the largest not-for-profit healthcare system in Texas. It employs over 10,000 nurses across more than 52 hospitals in more than 25 clinical specialties.

Diversity and Inclusion Initiatives at BUMC

The commitment to excellence at Baylor doesn’t only involve caring for patients. BUMC is also committed to diversity and inclusion measures for all. As a result, DiversityComm recognized the BSW Health system as its Top Diversity Employer for 2022. Navigating the Baylor University Medical Center Campus

Baylor University Medical Center is located in central Dallas at 3500 Gaston Avenue. As a major medical center, BUMC has various options for employees commuting to and around the campus. Depending on the location of your travel housing in regards to the BUMC campus, you have two options: parking on-site or taking the rail.

If you choose to drive and park on-site, you must pay for parking at one of the many parking garages or private parking lots on campus. Once parked, you take a shuttle from the garage to the hospital. Parking options vary in cost, so compare parking prices if you want to drive your vehicle.

Riding the Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) to BUMC can save you the hassle and money involved with self-parking. The DART offers a direct route to BUMC on the green line, so research the location of the off-site parking lot to see if it’s a viable option for you. Taking public transportation may not be as convenient as parking on campus, but it’s often more affordable and helps you avoid the stress of finding a parking spot.

Things to Do While on Assignment at BUMC

As a traveler working at BUMC, you have the opportunity to work in the 2nd Best Place to Live in Texas, according to U.S. News & World Report. On your days off, you’ll find plenty to explore in Dallas and the surrounding areas. Luckily, Baylor University Medical Center is close to the heart of Dallas, so you won’t have much trouble finding something fun to do in the area.

Dallas, Fort Worth, and Arlington are often referred to as the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex (DFW) because the areas are so close. Between these three cities, you have a wide variety of options for activities. With a mild climate and a warm summer, outdoor activities like exploring the many hiking trails in the area are great for the outdoor enthusiast.

The John F. Kennedy Memorial is a top place to visit if you’re into history. If you’re the type that loves amusement parks, Six Flags Over Texas is a short 20-minute drive to Arlington from central Dallas. Outdoor and nature enthusiasts will enjoy the scenery of the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden. If you’re a foodie, the DFW area has you covered with Texas barbeque spots in all directions, plus many other dining options spanning various cuisines.
