Overview of Memorial Hermann Hospital
Memorial Hermann Hospital opened its doors in 1925 on the current site of the Texas Medical Center campus. It’s the primary teaching hospital for the McGovern Medical School at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth). As one of only two certified Level 1 trauma centers within the greater Houston area, Memorial Hermann provides 24/7 emergency care. Its Life Flight® service provides emergency rescue within a 150-mile radius.
Today, the Memorial Hermann Health System encompasses 17 hospitals with 4,233 licensed beds in Greater Houston. Its facilities include 11 acute care hospitals, a children’s hospital, an orthopedic hospital, two rehabilitation hospitals and two surgical hospitals.
In addition to hospitals, the private health system offers care through numerous ambulatory surgery centers, rehabilitation clinics, imaging centers, breast care centers and walk-in clinics. An additional nine Memorial Hermann urgent care centers operate as joint ventures.

Memorial Hermann Texas Medical Center
The health system’s flagship location, Memorial Hermann Texas Medical Center, is the second-largest hospital in Texas, with 1,082 beds. The facility comprises six interconnected buildings with more than 1 million square feet of space, housing numerous specialty facilities providing quality patient care.
Nurses can practice in different specialties within the hospital’s institutes and centers of excellence, including:
- Red Duke Trauma Institute: One of two Level 1 trauma centers in the Greater Houston area, this 200-bed institute delivers life-saving care. The hospital’s air ambulance service has six helicopters providing emergency transport.
- Mischer Neuroscience Institute: According to its website, the comprehensive neuroscience program at this institute currently performs more neurosurgical procedures than any other Houston hospital system.
- Heart and Vascular Institute: Based in a 230,000-square-foot facility, this institute treats patients with complex and advanced heart disease.
- Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital: With 332 beds, this facility includes a NICU, PICU and labor and delivery unit.
- John S. Dunn Burn Center: As Houston’s only comprehensive burn center, it provides critical care, acute care, burn reconstruction, scar management and rehabilitation.
- Cancer Center: Oncologists and researchers at the hospital’s cancer center collaborate to customize treatments and improve survival rates for more than 12 types of cancer.
- Transplant Center: The hospital’s transplant team performs heart, kidney, liver, lung and pancreas transplants for adult and pediatric patients.
- Rockets Orthopedic Hospital: This hospital specializes in orthopedic surgery, complex spine treatments and surgeries and sports-related spine and orthopedic conditions.
Equity, Diversity and Inclusion
Recognizing its diverse workforce, Memorial Hermann began developing a long-term equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) program in 2018. This comprehensive initiative addresses structural barriers within the organization and across Greater Houston. It focuses on four pillars:

Transportation and Amenities
Memorial Hermann’s main hospital is part of the Texas Medical Center campus, a hub of medical institutions, research labs and colleges and universities. Employees can easily access the medical campus by public transit with Metrorail, Houston’s light rail network. Complimentary shuttles operate throughout the campus for employees, patients and visitors.
Three parking garages with pay stations offer convenient staff parking on the medical campus. However, on-site parking fees can be expensive. Conversely, you may park at the Fannin South Park and Ride, pay a nominal parking rate and take the Metrorail to Memorial Hermann Hospital.
Employees have various food options at Memorial Hermann Texas Medical Center, including salad, pizza, entrees, sushi, sandwiches, wraps, pastries and gourmet coffee. The campus has cafeterias at Robertson Pavilion and Sarofim Pavilion and cafes at Cullen Pavilion. You’ll also find Starbucks and Au Bon Pain at the Memorial Hermann Medical Plaza and Chick-Fil-A at the UT Professional Building.
