Respiratory Therapist (RT) – Job Breakdown

Position: Respiratory Therapist (RT)
Facility: IU Health – Specific facility not provided
Location: Indiana
Shift: Night – 3×12-hour shifts
Hours: 7:00 PM–7:30 AM
Guaranteed Hours: Not specified
Contract Duration: 13 weeks
First-Time Travelers: Accepted
Local Candidates: Accepted (Indiana residents are considered local).

Mandatory Requirements

• Active Indiana Respiratory Therapist license – must be in hand before start.
• NBRC Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT).
• Minimum 18 months of experience; job description specifies 2 years with 18 months of recent ICU experience.
• ACLS.
• BLS/BCLS.
• Accredited respiratory therapy education through CoARC and regionally accredited through CHEA.
• Must be comfortable floating between Methodist, University, Fishers, and Morgan facilities.
• Must work every other weekend (Saturday and Sunday).
• Must work 2 out of the 3 paired major holidays.

Preferred Requirements

• Cerner experience.
• PALS is listed with an asterisk; confirm whether required or preferred.
• Emergency Department experience.
• Pediatric experience.

Required Clinical Skills

• Adult critical care.
• BiPAP and CPAP.
• High-flow nasal cannula (HFNC).
• Aerosol setup and mask.
• Albuterol, Atrovent, and Xopenex.
• Drawing and interpreting arterial blood gases (ABGs).
• Extubation and intubation assistance.
• Mechanical ventilation and weaning.
• Trach collar and tracheostomy care/management.
• Nasal and oral airway placement.
• Nasal and oral suctioning.
• Sputum specimen collection.
• Troubleshooting high-pressure alarms.
• T-piece and handheld/ultrasonic treatments.

Schedule & Weekend Requirements

• 3×12-hour night shifts.
• 7:00 PM–7:30 AM.
• Every other weekend: Saturday and Sunday.
• Weekend coverage is mandatory.
• No call requirement specified.
• Floating is mandatory for all travelers.

Holiday Requirements

Candidates must work 2 out of the following 3 paired holiday periods:

• November 27 and 28
• December 24 and 25
• December 31 and January 1

Floating Requirements

Candidates must be willing to float between:

• Methodist
• University
• Fishers
• Morgan

Floating to an affiliate hospital or nearby facility is also required under the general IU Health travel policy.

Vaccination Requirements

• COVID-19 vaccine: Not required.
• Flu vaccine: Required.
• Medical/religious exemptions are accepted.
