Scientist - Lab

Location: Emergency hospital, Bossier City, Louisiana Employment Type: Travel, Full Time Contract Length: 13 weeks Start: ASAP Shift: Nights, 7PM to 7AM On Call: No call

Summary

This role performs all routine and complicated laboratory procedures, including specimen processing and handling, testing of patient specimens, calculating and reporting results, quality control, operation and maintenance of instruments and equipment, and assisting in developing new procedures and protocols. The role may also perform phlebotomy and other patient-oriented tasks, along with other related duties as requested or directed.

Responsibilities

• Meets expectations of the applicable facility competencies (Leader of Self, Leader of Others, or Leader of Leaders).
• Performs all routine and complicated laboratory procedures in the assigned primary section, including age- or sex-specific values.
• Operates, maintains, and troubleshoots laboratory instrumentation and equipment, makes minor repairs, and notifies biomedical support as needed.
• Must cross-train to other laboratory sections as needed.
• Ensures the laboratory's quality control program is followed.
• Calculates, enters, and/or verifies laboratory results.
• Utilizes the Laboratory Information System.
• Provides notification and documentation of critical laboratory values.
• Processes patient specimens, including collection, handling, and distribution, with awareness of minimal pediatric specimen volumes when required.
• Participates in evaluating, developing, and implementing new or updated testing procedures and protocols.
• Adapts patient care to the population-specific, developmental, physical, psychosocial, and cultural needs of patients served.
• Adheres to the facility's core values.
• Completes all required compliance and regulatory tasks and follows applicable policies and procedures.

Required Qualifications

• Valid Medical Lab Scientist license in Louisiana
• Medical Lab Scientist experience of at least 1 year, completed within the last year
• Certification as MT, MLS, CLS, or MLT
• Bachelor's degree or higher in chemical, physical, biological, or clinical laboratory science or medical technology, or foreign education evaluated as equivalent to a U.S. bachelor's degree in such a field
• Experience in the blood bank
• Experience on the microbiology bench
• Experience on the chemistry bench
• Experience on the hematology bench
• Clinical rotation through the immunology bench
• Experience with urine studies
