Registered Nurse – Medical Surgical / Telemetry

Job Summary

• Work on a 34-bed Cardiac Renal Unit specializing in Medical Surgical / Telemetry patients.
• Night shift: 12-hour shifts from 6:30 PM to 7:00 AM.
• Guaranteed 36 hours per week (except during holidays when the unit is closed).
• Float requirements include first to float within skillset to nearby campuses (8-11 miles away) with 2-hour notice; mid-shift float within the same campus possible.
• Weekend/Holiday schedule: Three weekends every six weeks and every other holiday.
• No on-call or call-back required.
• Teaching hospital environment; may require precepting students and new hires.

Patient Population

• Post cardiac procedures (heart catheterization, ablation, pacemaker)
• Atrial fibrillation with rapid ventricular response (A-fib RVR)
• End-stage renal disease (ESRD)
• Congestive heart failure (CHF)
• Sepsis
• Tracheostomies
• Nephrostomy tubes, continuous bladder irrigation (CBI), renal biopsy
• Behavioral health and detox patients

Required Qualifications

• Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Indiana.
• Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
• Minimum 2 years of Medical Surgical / Telemetry nursing experience, with at least some experience within the last year.
• One completed travel nursing assignment.
• Current certifications: BLS and ACLS issued by the American Heart Association, and NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS).
• Experience in a trauma level II facility.
• Proficient in telemetry and 12-lead EKG interpretation.
• Experience caring for patients recovering from heart catheterization (femoral/TR bands).
• Peripheral IV (PIV) insertion skills.
• Management of chest tubes and indwelling drains.
• Experience with continuous bladder irrigation (CBI) and detox/CIWA protocols.
• Central line care experience.
• Recent experience with Epic electronic health record system.

Skills and Competencies

• Telemetry and 12-lead EKG interpretation.
• Care of patients recovering from heart catheterization (femoral/TR bands).
• Peripheral IV insertion.
• Management of chest tubes and indwelling drains.
• Drip management including cardiac drips (cardizem, amiodarone) and others (heparin, lasix, protonix).
• Experience with continuous bladder irrigation (CBI) and detox/CIWA protocols.
• Central line care.
• Strong assessment and critical thinking skills required.
• Resilient, adaptable to change, and able to work hard in a fast-paced environment.

Unit Information

• Nurse-to-patient ratio: Days 1:4-5; Nights 1:6-7.
• Charge nurse also takes patient assignments.
• Strong leadership team.
• Dress code: Navy blue scrubs only; no competing health system or agency logos allowed.
• Attendance policy: More than 3 call-ins may result in termination.

Additional Information

• No local candidates within a 40-mile radius will be considered.
• COVID-19 vaccine is not currently required but subject to change.
• Orientation includes bi-weekly sessions starting August 10.
• Guaranteed hours are not provided during orientation week.
