MedSurg/Oncology RN

Location: Omaha, Nebraska Contract Length: 13 weeks Shift: Nights, 3 x 12-hour shifts (0630-1900), 36 hours per week

Unit Details

• Unit: Med/Surg Oncology
• Beds: 21
• Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:5
• Patient types: Medical/surgical patients, with a specialty in post-op cancer intervention (e.g., prostatectomy, mastectomy)
• Titratable drips: Yes, RNs are required to titrate. Examples: heparin, lidocaine, TPN gtt
• Telemetry: Yes, with central monitoring; RNs read strips and notice changes
• Nurse aides: Sometimes, depending on sitter needs (1:15)
• Charge Nurse/House Supervisor: Yes
• Floating: Rare, and only to another medical/surgical unit
• Scrub color: Navy

Required Qualifications

• BLS certification
• Valid driver's license at submittal, used to confirm the candidate lives outside 50 miles
• Pass/fail exam on Friday during orientation (open book, on skills learned). A score of 90% or higher is required to pass, or the contract will be terminated.
• Radius rule: Must live more than 50 miles away and may not work full-time, part-time, or PRN at any facility in the associated health system.
• No artificial nails in patient care areas. Refusal to remove nails will lead to contract termination.

Preferred Qualifications

• Oncology certification (a plus, not required)
• Chemotherapy is not required for travelers because of internal competency requirements.

Schedule and Requirements

• Weekends: Every 3rd weekend. Six weekend shifts are required in a 6-week schedule period (weekend nights are Fridays and Saturdays).
• Holidays: Rotating
• On-call or standby: None
• Orientation: Unit/department-specific orientation required
