Job Opportunity: ICU/Acute Care Registered Nurse (RN)

Contract Length: 13 weeks

Job Overview

Seeking an experienced ICU traveling nurse for a 13-week assignment starting ASAP. The position involves working 12-hour shifts with a nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:2 to ensure optimal patient care.

Patient Population & Common Diagnoses

• COPD
• Atrial Fibrillation (AFIB)
• Post-operative cases (e.g., colon resections)
• Diabetic patients
• COVID-19 patients
• Occasional alcohol withdrawal
• Suicidal patients
• GI bleeds

Clinical Responsibilities

• Manage a range of ICU patient conditions
• Proficiency in titrating critical drips such as Cardizem, Levophed, and Insulin
• Care for minimal sedation and ventilated patients

Shift Details

• 12-hour shifts: 7 AM - 7:30 PM or 7 PM - 7:30 AM
• Schedules posted 6 weeks in advance
• Weekend requirements: every third weekend (night shifts) or every other weekend (day shifts)
• Holiday work is negotiable but willingness is helpful
• Call/standby not required but appreciated

Orientation

• 3 shifts of unit-specific orientation during the first week

  • Day 1: 12-hour shift for HR, infection control, computer learning, and equipment training
  • Day 2: 4 hours of additional unit orientation
  • Day 3: 12-hour shift with a preceptor on the floor

Support & Staffing

• Charge nurse and house supervisor available
• Nurse aides from Acute Care may assist but ICU nurses provide total patient care
• Hospitalist and Nurse Practitioner available daily; on-call support at night
• ER, Anesthesia, and Cardiopulmonary physicians available for emergent situations
• Respiratory Therapy available 24/7 with ventilators, BiPAP, Vapotherm

Equipment & Monitoring

• RNs read their own telemetry strips (no dedicated monitor techs)
• Nihon Kohden cardiac monitors used

Floating & Additional Details

• ICU staff may float to Med-Surg/Acute Care infrequently
• Travelers generally remain in ICU
• Same director oversees ICU and Med-Surg units with unified charting format

Dress Code

• Pewter-colored scrub tops or jackets, black pants, black shoes, and black socks
• Colored tops allowed if outermost layer is pewter

Required Qualifications

• Valid RN license in Illinois
• Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) / Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
• Minimum 2 years of ICU (Intensive Care Unit) nursing experience, with ICU experience within the last year
• Certifications: ACLS, BLS, PALS, CPI (can be obtained on site)
