Overview

Required Qualifications

• Valid California RN license, verified through primary source verification
• Minimum 2 years of Med Surg / Telemetry experience as a Registered Nurse
• Med Surg / Telemetry experience within the last year
• One completed travel assignment
• ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) certification issued by American Heart Association or RQI
• BLS certification issued by American Heart Association or RQI (instructor cards not accepted)
• Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) / Associate Degree in Nursing
• Experience with Epic

Preferred Qualifications

• OCN certification
• ONS/ONCC certification

Competencies

• Medication/pharmacology competency exam
• Unit-specific competency exam
• Basic dysrhythmia (EKG) competency exam
• Infection control/bloodborne pathogens exam, with a score of 80% or higher required (CORE exams not accepted)
• Arrhythmia recognition assessment (EKG exam), 80% passing score, required for per diem only

Background and Health Requirements

• Criminal background check within 1 year of start, updated annually; includes a 7-year search (statewide, nationwide, sex offender, and federal). Open cases or DUI hits within the last 5 years are an automatic cancellation.
• 9-panel drug screen within 1 year of start (instant drug screen accepted); not updated annually
• Physical exam within 1 year of start, updated annually
• N95 mask fit test within 1 year of start, renewed annually; PAPR accepted only with proof of a failed N95 fit test
• TB: negative PPD, TSpot, or QGold within 1 year of start. If positive, a negative chest X-ray within 4 years plus an annual TB questionnaire.
• Rubeola, mumps, rubella, and varicella: positive titer, or 2 vaccines after age 1. Negative or equivocal titers require 2 boosters; candidates may start with the second booster pending.
• Tdap required; if it cannot be obtained for a health reason, a Pertussis titer showing immunity is required. Declining Tdap without immunity results in cancellation.
• Hepatitis B: vaccine series or declination required; titer not accepted
• Hepatitis C: titer strongly preferred; declination accepted with a stated reason (not blank or "N/A")
• Flu vaccine required by 12/5 for the 2026-27 season. Declinations are accepted, but decliners must follow seasonal masking guidelines.

Not Required

• NIH Stroke certification (not required for Telemetry RNs)

References and Documentation

• 2 references within 1 year of start, completed in the current specialty, from a leadership role (department manager, supervisor, charge nurse, nurse manager, or assistant nurse manager)
