ER Registered Nurse (Per Diem)

Overview

• Location: Placentia, California
• Employment type: Per diem
• Contract length: 13 weeks
• Shift: Night, 12 hours (19:00 to 07:30)
• Hours: 12 per week
• Unit: ER, 20 rooms, 20 beds
• Average daily census: 80 patients; 80 visits
• Patient ratio: 1:4
• Patient age groups: Neonates, infants, pediatrics, adolescents, adults, and geriatrics
• Availability: At least one day per week is required.
• Commuting: Must live within a 50-mile radius.

Required Qualifications

• 1 year of ER experience
• Current state license, verified through primary source verification
• Two references from the current specialty, completed within the last year, from a leadership role (Department Manager, Supervisor, Charge Nurse, Nurse Manager, or Assistant Nurse Manager)
• Copies of continuing education (CEUs) completed within the last 24 months, listing the candidate's name, course name, completion date, and contact hours (1 contact hour minimum; the CPR card alone does not qualify)
• Not within 1 year of separation from the health system

Certifications

• ACLS: AHA or RQI only; instructor cards not accepted
• BLS: AHA or RQI only; instructor cards not accepted
• PALS: AHA or RQI only; instructor cards not accepted
• CPI: Only the CPI Blue Card is accepted; other CPI courses are not. MAB is not accepted for ER.
• NIHSS (NIH Stroke Certification): Required for this role

Assessments and Competencies

• Medication/calculation exam for all RNs
• Arrhythmia Recognition Assessment (EKG exam) for ER RNs, requiring an 80% passing score. It has 10 questions, with 2 points each for rhythm interpretation and intervention. Ventricular fibrillation, ventricular tachycardia, third-degree heart block, and asystole must be identified correctly with the correct intervention.
• Unit-specific competency exam
• Infection control/bloodborne pathogens exam, requiring an 80% passing score. The CORE exam does not substitute.
• Electronic health record test-out, completed remotely during orientation; required modules must be completed if the test-out is not passed.

Orientation

• One 12-hour day shift on the unit, scheduled based on availability, Monday through Friday
• 12 to 14 hours of pre-start modules

Health, Screening, and Compliance

• Background check: Criminal background check within 1 year of start, updated annually, with a 7-year search
• Drug screen: 9-panel drug screen within 1 year of start; instant drug screen accepted
• Physical exam: Within 1 year of start, updated annually
• TB: Negative PPD, TSpot, or QuantiFERON within 1 year of start. If positive, a negative chest X-ray within 4 years and an annual TB questionnaire are required.
• N95 fit test: Within 1 year of start, renewed annually. PAPR is acceptable only after a documented failed N95 fit test.
• Immunizations: Rubeola, mumps, rubella, and varicella require a positive titer or 2 vaccines after age 1; negative or equivocal titers require 2 boosters. Hepatitis B requires a series or declination (titer not accepted). Hepatitis C titer is strongly preferred, but a declination is accepted. Tdap is required; a pertussis titer is accepted only for documented medical reasons.
• Influenza: Vaccine required by 12/5, or a signed declination. Declinations are accepted and require seasonal masking. Onsite vaccines are available.
• Other documents: Government-issued photo ID, signed HIPAA acknowledgment, signed unit job description, and signed orientation and skin care documents
