Registered Nurse - Med Surge Overflow

Location: Fishersville, Virginia (The Joint Center) Employment Type: Travel/Contract Contract Length: 8-26 weeks Shift: Night, 3x12 hours (19:00-07:00), 36 hours/week

Role Overview

• Fast-paced inpatient surgical unit
• Accepts pediatric surgical patients aged 12 and above, depending on procedure
• Surgical procedures include general, abdominal, urological, orthopedic, hysterectomy, mastectomy, spine, and bariatric surgery
• Block scheduling cannot be guaranteed; the facility will try to group shifts together when available
• Floating to other units is expected at times and must be confirmed with the traveler before final signature

Requirements

• Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
• Valid RN license in Virginia (verification required)
• Med Surg experience of 2 years, with experience within the last year
• NURSYS verification
• BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross
• Current application/resume
• 2 professional references
• Skills checklist for the applicable specialty, updated annually
• Every other weekend required
• Holiday policy: if one holiday falls in the assignment, expect to work it; if two, work one; if three, work two. Any RTO must be included in submission covers and assignment confirmation documents.

Eligibility Notes

• Accepts first-time travelers
• Does not accept local candidates (50-mile radius rule)
• Does not accept candidates with a pending license

Background, Drug Screening, and Health Requirements

• 7-year criminal background check, completed within 30 days of start
• EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks, completed within 30 days of start
• Negative 10-panel drug test within 30 days of start, including marijuana. Zero tolerance for THC, even with a medical marijuana card. An additional onsite drug screen is required, and a failed screen results in cancellation.
• Physical exam within 1 year of start, renewed annually
• Tdap within 10 years, or declination
• TB screening (QuantiFERON, T-SPOT, or negative 2-step PPD) within 1 year of start, plus an annual TB questionnaire
• Rubeola, mumps, and rubella: 2 MMR vaccines or positive titer. For negative or equivocal titers, declination, 2 vaccines, or 1 booster is accepted.
• Varicella: 2 vaccines or positive titer. Declination is acceptable for a negative or equivocal titer.
• Hepatitis B: positive titer, vaccine series, or declination
• Seasonal flu vaccine or approved exemption required (flu season 9/1-3/31). Vaccine deadline for 2026-27 is 10/23; exemption requests are due 10/1. Declinations are not accepted.
• Fit test for N95 respirator, updated annually (3M N95 1870+ preferred)

Certifications Listed for Other Units

• ACLS, PALS, NRP, TNCC, NIH Stroke Certification, and CPI are listed for specific units (e.g., ED, ICU, PCU, PACU, OB, NICU, Psych). They are not listed as required for this role.
