Required Qualifications

• Valid RN license in Texas
• Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
• 1 year of Emergency Department experience, with ED experience within the last year
• Current BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
• Current ACLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
• Current PALS certification issued by the American Heart Association
• Current TNCC certification

Summary

The competent RN practices independently in the same or similar clinical setting, demonstrates awareness of all relevant aspects of a situation, provides routine and complex care, and continues to develop the ability to manage contingencies of clinical nursing. The RN makes appropriate assignments and delegates to other care providers to help manage the clinical situation.

Responsibilities

• Provides nursing care using the nursing process (assessment, diagnosis, planning, intervention, and evaluation) consistent with the ANA Scope and Standards of Practice.
• Addresses increasingly complex psychological, emotional, cultural, and social needs of patients and families.
• Administers medications and treatments using the appropriate protocol, and monitors for side effects and effectiveness.
• Documents patient history, symptoms, medications, and care given.
• Assesses learning needs and provides education to patients, family members, and/or caregivers.

Orientation and Competency Requirements

• Newly hired experienced RNs must attend New Nurses Orientation within the first 30 days of hire.
• New hires are precepted by a designated trained staff member and must complete the organizational entry competency validation and an Emergency Department-specific competency validation.
• Newly licensed RNs may participate in a residency program or other specific orientation.
• Completion of all annual competency verification requirements.
