Unit Overview

  • Unit: Medsurg and Cardiac Observation
  • Beds: 21 (usually staffed for 18)
  • Average RN ratio: 1:6
  • Common diagnoses: Pre/post cath, chest pain rule-outs on heparin drips, COPD, CHF, pacers, arrhythmias, and general MedSurg diagnoses
  • Charge nurse: Available 24/7. Day charge sometimes takes patients; night charge always takes patients.

  • Telemetry: Telemetry monitor techs are on the 3rd floor. RNs must read and interpret strips. A monitor on this unit allows real-time viewing.

  • Drips: Set-rate Cardizem and Amiodarone only. Occasional drips include Bumex and Lasix.
  • Respiratory equipment: BiPAP and CPAP for supportive therapy only. No high-flow equipment. Patients dependent on BiPAP or CPAP would likely be transferred to a higher acuity unit.

Scheduling and Time Off

  • Holidays: Permanent staff follow a holiday rotation. If needed, travelers are expected to work weekends.

  • Call/standby: Possible if census is low, but not often. Any call or standby would be specified in the contract.

Floating

  • Travelers are typically the first to float.
  • They may float anywhere in the hospital, including ICU and Stepdown, but only receive patients within their skill set.

Orientation

  • 1 day of computer training
  • 1 day shadowing on the floor with a preceptor
  • Day 3 onward: works independently

Dress Code

  • Royal blue scrubs
  • Scrub jackets are optional, but if worn must be an actual scrub jacket. No hoodies or sweat jackets.

Additional Notes

  • The unit is very busy and fast-paced, with up to 6 discharges per day and 6+ admissions.
  • Questions should be directed to the recruiter.
