Unit Staffing and Assignment Details
- Nights ratio (4 East): 1:5-6
- Charge nurse: A separate charge nurse covers 4 East and 4 West. They usually carry a full assignment and depend on staffing.
- Nurse aides (CNAs): 4 East usually has 2 CNAs per shift (1:10 ratio), with 1-2 called based on census. 4 West calls for 1-3 CNAs and usually has 2 (1:11-12 ratio).
- Drips: RNs are not required to titrate drips. Titratable drips move the patient to a higher level of care. Set-rate drips (such as Cardizem or Amio) can be changed by calling for a new rate, but more than one change in four hours requires transfer to a higher level of care.
- Respiratory equipment: PRN or nightly CPAP and BiPAP are used. Continuous use requires transfer to a higher level of care. High flow nasal cannula is seen regularly on 4 West. 4 West has 3 negative airflow rooms for TB, shingles, and similar cases.
- Telemetry: All beds are telemetry capable. Physicians choose telemetry patients and renew orders every 48 hours. Philips monitors are used. Nurses review strips each shift, and a central monitoring area measures and interprets them.
Scheduling
- Nurses self-schedule and may block schedule. Extra shifts are allowed, but no more than 6 shifts in a row.
- Weekends: every other weekend. Days work Saturday/Sunday, and nights work Friday/Saturday.
- Holidays: every other holiday. Day holidays are Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's Day. Night holidays are the eve of Memorial Day, July 3rd, the eve of Labor Day, the eve of Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, and New Year's Eve.
Floating
- May float down to MedSurg at a maximum ratio of 1:6.
- May float to other telemetry units, or up to IMC or ICU, if the assignment fits the RN's skill set (such as telemetry overflow or non-titrated drips on the floor).
Orientation
- Online education, 1 day of house orientation, and 2-3 days in the department with a preceptor.
- 12 non-billable orientation hours. Guaranteed hours do not apply during orientation.
Dress Code
- Scrubs are not provided. Any color professional scrubs are acceptable.
- Not allowed: crocs, artificial nails or nail enhancements (gel, dip, etc.), and jackets or sweaters with hoods or logos.
Additional Notes
- Patient experience and high-quality care are the highest priorities.
Submission Requirements
- Requested time off
- Candidates must pass a drug screen for all panels. The campus is drug-free.
