AAHIVP (AAHIVM) - HIV Pharmacist

The HIV Pharmacist (AAHIVP) certification is a professional credential for pharmacists who specialize in the treatment and management of patients with HIV/AIDS. Administered by organizations such as the American Academy of HIV Medicine (AAHIVM), this certification recognizes a pharmacist’s expertise in HIV pharmacotherapy, including antiretroviral therapy, management of treatment-related side effects, drug interactions, and patient education.

Course/Exam Format

Registration involves an application process, meeting eligibility criteria such as clinical experience and education, and paying the examination fee.

The AAHIVP exam includes 125 multiple-choice questions covering topics such as HIV disease management, antiretroviral therapy, opportunistic infections, co-morbidities, and adherence strategies.

The exam assesses knowledge and skills in optimizing HIV pharmacotherapy, patient counseling, and managing complex treatment regimens.

A passing score is determined by the certifying organization, and exam results are scored in one session.

Certification Requirements

A valid pharmacy license.

Clinical experience in HIV/AIDS care, often requiring a minimum number of hours or specific patient care encounters.

Completion of relevant continuing education in HIV/AIDS pharmacotherapy.

AAHIVP certification is must be renewed every 3 years. Pharmacist must:

• Maintain an active pharmacy license

• Remain actively involved in HIV care and prevention

• Complete 45 hours of HIV or HCV-related continuing education (CE) within the past 36 months

• Submit a credentialing application and registration fee
