COURSE FORMAT
About
The American Burn Association (ABA) offers Advanced Burn Life Support (ABLS) certification to provide advanced training in managing burn patients within the first 24 hours of their injury. ABLS certification benefits nurses, nurse practitioners, physicians, physicians assistants, and first responders.
Course Format
The ABLS course is 7 hours long, providing live, hands-on experience for clinicians. The course contains lectures, group discussions, and case studies. Participants will also work with a simulated burn experience during the training course.
ABLS course objectives include:
Prepare clinicians to manage airway
Evaluate the severity of burn injury
Provide fluid support
Triage if a patient must be transferred to a burn center
Provide physiologic monitor of victim
Assist with disaster management
ABLS Now Individual Course
Physicians: $300 (member), $300 (nonmember)
Non-Physicians: $175 (member), $175 (nonmember)
ABLS Live Provider Course
Physicians: $350-$375 (member), $350-$375 (nonmember)
Non-Physicians: $200-$250 (member), $200-$250 (nonmember)
Fees include course materials
ABLS courses are offered in-person in various regions across the country. Applicants can review the ABLS website and register for a course in their area. Once applicants have registered, they will receive an ABLS provider manual 2 weeks before the class.
The exam consists of practical application as well as a written examination.
Renewal
Renewal of ABLS provider credentials occurs over 4 years. Clinicians can renew by taking the ABLS Provider Live or online ABLS Now course. The ABLS Now course is an online, self-paced program. Candidates for renewal must register before accessing the Ameriburn eLearn courses.
Continuing Education
The ABA is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) and the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation, allowing it to offer continuing education credits for doctors and nurses. It awards contact hours for CE credits after verifying an individual's full attendance of a course and completion of an online evaluation form.
ABLS Now course provides 5.0 continuing education credit hours
Live ABLS Provider course offers 7.0 continuing education hours

After you complete the ABLS course, you're emailed an evaluation link. Once the ABA receives your completed evaluation, an electronic certification will be available.
